Dry mouth

Post by waterman49 » Tue May 04, 2021 10:03 pm

After about 2 to 3 hours sleeping with my CPAP machine I wake up with a mouth so dry my tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth. My machine has a humidifier and it seems to be working. The water is mostly gone by morning. But it does not help my problem. Does any one have this problem and does anyone have a solution

welcome to the zoo!

i second what lsat has posted.

i know for sure they can be found at riteaid and cvs. in the oral care section.

failing that, you can find them on amazon.

these are wee discs that fit between tooth and cheek. it slowly dissolves overnight, promoting saliva production.

good luck!
people say i'm self absorbed.
but that's enough about them.

How about giving us some more information??? You have given us absolutely NO information to go on.
Mouth breathing or mouth leaking WILL result in a dry mouth!
What SPECIFIC machine (make and model), mask and settings are you using?
Too much humidification can result in congestion for some people and when you can't breathe through your nose, you WILL breathe through your mouth. Massive leaking.......mouth or mask......will result in a higher use of water in your HH tank.

Are you using software to download your data to review it?

Can't suggest a solution until we know what is causing it.

Not the original poster, but I'm having the same problem.

Using a ResMed AirCurve 10 VAuto Bipap, with an AirTouch F20 mask. Humidifier set at maximum.

I've been using it since November 2020, and it's been working fine overall. But the last couple months, I've been waking up in the middle of the night with dry mouth pretty much every night.

The weird thing is, I never had this problem before, and I'm not sure what might have changed. I'm fairly sure I'm not breathing through my mouth during the night.

Is it possible that it's related to seasonal allergies somehow?

I seem to have cured my dry mouth by using a chin strap. My theory is that when the jaw drops (mouth does not open), the face shape changes sufficiently to disturb the seal of my nasal cradle mask -- which makes the machine pump our maximum air, which creates dry mouth. Using chin strap closes the haw and eliminates dry mouth. I happen to use the Respironics Premium chin strap.

PS My wife confirms that I do NOT breathe with mouth open. And a friend has a picture of me sleeping on the airplane with jaw obviously down but mouth not open.

I'm still rather confused about what might be causing the dry mouth in the first place, but I tried the XyliMelts, and they do seem to help - thanks!
