Phillips / Philips Respironics recent recall notice discussion thread
Re: Phillips / Philips Respironics recent recall notice discussion thread
Just received a DreamStation Auto CPAP per the recall. It shipped in auto mode, wide open pressure limits, and I did not have to send a prescription. I set it up this evening and put an SD card in it. I'll use it tonight and see how it does, then I'll probably shelve it until my Autoset conks out down the road. So far, it seems ok except that a few seconds after I start it the air flow is completely interrupted for a fraction of a second. Not sure if it has an issue or if this is part of the normal start-up. It's a little harsh when it happens. They included the humidifier, power supply, filter, pollen filter, but no SD card or travel case. They included a return shipping label and there is a threat to bill me if I don't return the recalled unit. It doesn't seem like they want anything but the actual machine to be returned, they don't want the humidifier, power supply, etc. This is replacing a System One, so I'm guessing they can't do anything with it anyway. The DreamStation I received appears to be a DreamStation "1", not a 2, model number DSX500S11F. It has a "recertified" label on it, and a manufacture date of 2019. I believe it said it had 6666 machine hours, 0 blower hours, and the paperwork says the recertified machines have new blowers installed. It looks pretty much like new.

In order to protect patients against Philips’ dangerous breathing machines, Sen. Richard Blumenthal told the FDA and DOJ they must take “the strongest enforcement action possible, including criminal charges, if the allegations are substantiated.”

Re: Phillips / Philips Respironics recent recall notice discussion thread
Letters from senators can help publicize situations, but the job of senators is to propose helpful legislation on such matters. Otherwise there is little benefit in, or authority to, their so-called "demands" about how agencies go about their jobs.
When businesses involved in products for health are left basically to self-police and self-regulate, all decisions will be self-serving and self-protecting of the business interest--not geared toward public interest. Politicians who express their outrage over that fact when it becomes publicly evident aren't really doing anything about it when all they do is bark in letters but propose no legislation that has bite.
And biting businesses on behalf of consumers is not what elected officials do, since elections tend to be funded by businesses. That is why issues involving consumer protection are a popular subject for discussion but an unpopular subject for actual action.
Follow the money. Note what people do, not what they say.

https://www.nytimes.com/2010/05/18/nyre ... nthal.html“We have learned something important since the days that I served in Vietnam,” Mr. Blumenthal said to the group gathered in Norwalk in March 2008. “And you exemplify it. Whatever we think about the war, whatever we call it — Afghanistan or Iraq — we owe our military men and women unconditional support.”
There was one problem: Mr. Blumenthal, a Democrat now running for the United States Senate, never served in Vietnam. He obtained at least five military deferments from 1965 to 1970 and took repeated steps that enabled him to avoid going to war, according to records.

Years ago I took a management course for where I had worked. One thing I remember well that was taught/suggested when speaking to employees was, 'tell them what they want hear, but don't necessarily take action upon what you tell them'. Politicians I suspect follow the same credence.SleepGeek wrote: ↑Sun Oct 22, 2023 7:17 amMust be election time.LSAT wrote: ↑Sun Oct 22, 2023 3:40 amhttps://bit.ly/408pTS7

As a Vietnam vet '68 I'm a member of a few Vietnam vets groups. Blumenthal was the topic of discussion for a good while in these groups and it wasn't particularly favorable for him. Liz Warren's claim of Native American roots is not too dissimilar. Politicians will be politicians when they have something to gain. Never have high expectations of them.

Re: Phillips / Philips Respironics recent recall notice discussion thread
just received a replacement Dreamstation 1 machine from Phillips. This process took way to long and Phillips should be ashamed. I ended up buying a Resmed 10 machine and will never do business with Phillips again. Now if i could just find the old Dreamstation 1, Its been two years!

Here's a YT video from PBS NewsHour about Philips' malfeasance. I hadn't known (but am not at all surprised) that the US FDA did nothing while all these reports flooded in.
