I have some sleep apnea which is supposedly remedied at a pressure of 7 cm or so, combined with very shallow breathing when I sleep. I switched from an autoasv vpap resmed 9 with a pressure support of 6 and epap or ipap of 9-15. New machine is a Philips System 1 bipap AVAPS C series dom 30 that I bought myself . I couldn’t convince my pulmonologist to prescribe it but a respiratory therapist told me about the benefits of it for my condition. I have configured it myself and am feeling much much much better. I am still dragging a little bit but that could be due to some hormones that still need better treatment.
I started AVAPS with the title volume of 700 and was still having some rough days so I increased that to 1100 and that made a big difference. Someone told me ideal title volume for my height (6 feet tall) and weight-160 pounds- is just under 700. But I am doing so much better with the title volume of 1100. Why is that? Am I risking damage to my lungs?
How high do you recommend I go on the tidal volume as a test to see if I feel better?
Here are my settings:
Tidal volume 1100
Ipap max 17
Ipap min 15
Epap 15
BPM 13
Ti 1.5
Rise time 1
Thank you, David
Correct settings for AVAPS?
Re: Correct settings for AVAPS?
What medical condition do you have? Your settings make no sense, unless the EPAP value is a typo.cpaputah wrote: ↑Mon Nov 29, 2021 7:46 amI have some sleep apnea which is supposedly remedied at a pressure of 7 cm or so, combined with very shallow breathing when I sleep. Re: Correct settings for AVAPS?
I have shallow breathing and sleep apnea. I'm not surprised the settings don't make sense-I set it up myself.
Re: Correct settings for AVAPS?
Why do you have shallow breathing - have you seen a doctor? Been tested for apnea? Do you have reports we can look at (after you've covered personal info)?
Re: Correct settings for AVAPS?
So I'm not sure what to do about the shallow breathing other than to treat it with a noninvasive ventilator. cpap and autoASV I don't believe were treating it sufficiently (I couldn't wake up consistently with energy and over the past week I have felt far better with the avaps). Changing the pressure support from 5 to 6 on ASVauto made a huge difference but I couldn't go any higher than a pressure support of six so that's why I switched to the noninvasive ventilator. I have asked three pulmonologist's about the shallow breathing and no one knows what to do other than CPAP. I couldn't attach the report but here it is now on my password-protected server. You may have to enter the username and password twice. Username p password p - just one letter each http://highperformanceppc.com/pulmonolo ... athing.pdf thank you
Re: Correct settings for AVAPS?
Your target tidal volume that you set is probably irrelevant. If you look at the basic parameters of your settings you have:
IPAP Min 15
IPAP Max 17
EPAP 15
So a min PS of 0 and a max PS of 2, so essentially insignificant and unhelpful if your goal is to correct shallow breathing.
The standard guide for ventilation of a normal person is to set a tidal volume of 8mL/kg. For 6ft that would be 620ml.
If anything you'd need to open up the PS min and max settings and drop the EPAP. Something like IPAP min 10, IPAP max 25, EPAP 5. Then if you're AHI shows obstructive events, raise EPAP and IPAP min by 1 until they go away.

Re: Correct settings for AVAPS?
I am fairly troubled by this thread. To the OP: please stop winging it and consult with your pulmonologist about your AVAPS settings. It’s great that you’re feeling better, but as you intimate, you need to be sure you’re not doing damage to yourself.
