Humidifier rust spots?

Post by Smackfish » Sun Dec 26, 2021 3:41 pm

Hello, my 3 week old resmed humidifier tub has what looks like small rust spots. I returned the 1st one and now it's happening again. I have always used distilled water and never had a problem with my original one. Does anyone know what the problem is?

Which model ResMed does this water chamber belong to?

If it is the S9 model...standard or dishwasher approved chamber??

What is your cleaning routine made up of?

Mine is 3 years old and looks like new.....Even tap water should not cause rust after 3 weeks. Curious about the machine..

Yep. Even when I was using the S9 I never had that happen either. So never with either many years with S9 and now the AirSense/AirCurve 10 model line.
Of course my cleaning routine is pretty much non existent so I really have never done anything in terms of cleaning that might affect the finish. Rare sporadic hot soapy water and rinse is all I have ever done. No scrubbing with anything abrasive at all and we don't have a dishwasher so not even washed in dishwasher.

My machine is a Air Sense 10 and all I clean with is mild soap no abrasive cleaners. It's not actually rust just the color of rust however it does clean off. Mabe bacteria or ? I rinse it out daily and clean with soap weekly. Thanks for your replies

Could be iron in your water supply . . .
Likely harmless, but gross, nonetheless.

My well water is loaded with iron and I have never had those sorts of red spots....but of course I don't wash very often to be using tap water and I always dry the chamber with a paper towel so any tap water isn't going to be on the chamber very long at all.

Have you thought about doing a final rinse (after washing) with distilled water just to see if that makes a difference or not?

Also...when was the last time you changed the filter and what does the filter look like??

When you say filter do you mean the disposable air filter? If so... yes I do regularly. Never heard of a water filter on those so am guessing that's what you mean

I too have an Air Sense 10. I've been using the same tank for 5 years!
I only use distilled water in it. Occasionally when on the road, I'll use drinking water or tap water if none is available.
I just top off the tank each night.
Once a month or so, when the water looks a little cloudy, I'll give it a good wash with soap and water.

The bacteria I do get in it...is generally pink in color, based upon the color the Q-tips turn when I wipe in the corners/edges.

Last month, my kid had some of those effervescent cleaning tables lying around, that they use for soaking their retainer in...and I used one to soak the tank with, for about 15 mins. It actually cleaned it well, and had a nice "minty" smell afterwards!

What's in that distilled water you use? What brand? I just use Kroger's brand - For some reason, Wal-Marts distilled water produces bacteria quicker than Krogers does.

IME the bacteria and pink slime come from leaving the chamber open to "air dry" in the room. I never leave mine open for anything. Check the label on the Walmart brand for minerals added esp. if you found it in the baby section.
