When to replace pillows?

Post by pbrankin » Fri Feb 04, 2022 2:07 am

Hi,

I’m using a Resmed P30i.

How often “should” I replace the pillows?

I’ve seen it stated that every 14 days is optimal. However, if they are not leaking, and are still comfortable, why change them at all?

It would cost me £40 ($55) to get a new set each time.

My current pillows are 2 months old.

Don’t want to jeopardise treatment quality but don’t want to spend unnecessarily either.

Many thanks

Paul.

Obviously, like any other item. you replace when it no longer does the job. For some people a replacement at 2-3 weeks may be necessary while for others the time may be 2-3 months. Don't determine your replacement based on a chart or a calendar.

When they no longer do the job for you...or you just want to replace them.
With common sense care they can last months and months and months.
I once used a nasal pillow for 8 months before I retired it and it got retired more from just looking yucky than from ability to maintain a seal or not.

There are some extra measures that can be taken to prolong the life of silicone in general.
Like the boiling in baking soda and distilled water trick.

DMEs will tell you that they need to be replaced more often because that means more money to them...and big surprise...how often just happens to coincide with how often most insurance companies will pay for the replacement.
Cash cow for DMEs. Most silicone mask cushions and/or pillows will actually still function just fine long past that allowed replacement window has passed.

As in most things CPAP as LSAT and Pugsy said, YMMV. My current P10 pillows are about 6 months old and in need of a replacement as I noticed leaks are increasing a bit even though I replaced the headgear a few weeks ago, which tells me it is likely the pillows needing a refresh. My heated ClimateLine hose was replaced at 9 months as it developed a small tear where I caught it on the bed frame, but it likely could have gone quite a bit longer had I not snagged it. The F20 FFM I occasionally use when congested is a year old and still good as it is not used often.

I wipe things down fairly often with inexpensive baby wipes, but not as often as I probably should. I wash the hose and mask almost monthly in soapy warm water, rinse, and let dry. Others may do it more or less often, it is a personal preference based on what works for you.
Sometimes it is the very people who no one imagines anything of who do the things that no one imagines

When it comes time to replace said tired pillow and it was likely going into the trash bin anyway you might consider trying the baking soda and distilled water boiling trick.
I have done it and it did buy some additional life to the pillows.

I use a P30 and I am on the same pillow since October 2021. No leaks. I don't use humidity so I can go longer without cleaning the nose piece as well, usually every two weeks.

Replacing your nasal pillows every 14 days is optimal.

Optimal for making profit for the ones selling them.

I've been using the same set of P30i pillows since June 8. Changed the old set out because the glue seal became separated.

As long as they work, you don't have to feed their Holstein.
