ResMed AS10 Std vs Dishwasher Safe Humidifier Tank

Post by jas32 » Sun Mar 13, 2022 9:54 pm

Just scored a low hour AS10 this weekend and found out there are 2 different humidifier tanks available for it (PN 37299 for Std, PN 37479 for DW safe). Also found online reports of leaking tanks on AS10s.

Wondering what’s everyone’s experience? I’m curious to know what’s the difference between the two considering a significant difference in price. I never had any water leaks with any of my old units (System One, DS1 or ResMed S9) on my 11 years using CPAPs, but I hand washed my tanks all the time. No plan on running them in a dishwasher ever.

Go for the better tank--check online prices.
Your DME may have put an unreasonably high price on it, as is common.

The non-dishwasher safe tanks have "Distilled water only" on them.
The dishwasher safe tanks don't.

So, either:
a) Distilled water really is just a cleaning convenience and not a health concern
b) ResMed doesn't care about the health of people who own dishwashers

I have never had a leak and I have never changed a tank.

I was hoping someone with first hand experience who may have compared them side-by-side can give an honest review if the extra cost is worth it.

Yes I actually checked online prices and did not get any DME involved. The price difference online is almost double (approx $20 for Std vs $35 for DW safe). I use distilled water 100% so that's not an issue as well. More concerned if the cheaper one is more prone to leaks. Obviously I don't want it to ruin my night table.

I have never bought a dishwasher safe water chamber...cost for one reason and the other is I don't have a dishwasher.

I have had 3 water chambers develop a leak over the years of using the ResMed cpap....2 times were my own fault because I dropped the chambers onto the hardwood floor.

Only once have I had a leaky water chamber that I couldn't blame on user error.

We are never really told the big difference (if any) between the two types. I wonder if it relates to the temperatures that might be involved with using a dishwasher.

We also don't know exactly what might have happened to those chambers that people complain of springing a leak.
Did they maybe bump it hard and not realize it? Did they maybe drop it like I did?

Anyhow....unless I planned on using a dishwasher often...I wouldn't go spending the extra money for the more costly water chamber unless I repeatedly kept having leaky chambers and I knew for sure I wasn't a contributing factor like when I dropped the 2 I dropped.
Now if I had repeated episodes of it leaking and I knew or thought I knew that I couldn't have harmed it....I might try the more expensive chamber just to see if it really made any difference.
Since it has only happened to me once where I couldn't explain the leak...that's not enough for me to go spending extra money.

I have had a few leaky tanks with both types. No rough handling, or drops. I have seen some reports of this possibly being a run of bad tanks. I had purchased one from Amazon last summer, and it was leaking a few months later. I purchased another from the sponsor. It was fine for about 4 months, and also started leaking.
I called them, and they said they were warranted for 1 year, and they replaced it at no charge. Great service.

Not all of them leak. My first one was good for over a year, and it was not leaking water, but was not making a good seal with the unit.

Frankly, I never found much difference in the dishwasher safe version. The construction seems to be the same, but perhaps a different plastic formulation. I haven't been putting it in the dishwasher anyway since the instructions still warn about the high temp cycles. I just wash it out with a bit of Dawn from time to time.

What tank is what??

I just got my new CPAP machine - A nice new shiny ResMed AirSense 10 w/0 hours on it!! Woo Hoo!!

Anyways, the new machine did not come with an SD card (which I expected) and a newer flavor of water tank with a round heating plate bottom.
Both said "Distilled Water Only" on them.

Does anyone know the difference in these tanks?

The tank on the right in the first pic is my 5-6 year old original tank - the brown spot is from when it ran out of water the 1st night!

The newer tank seems much lighter and the plastic does not feel as thick...makes me wonder if this newer tank is prone to leaking as opposed to my 5-6 year original battle hardened tank (no pun intended)

The one with the round bottom appears to be the tank for the AirSense 11. Does it actually fit the older AirSense 10?

Yep, the one with the round bottom is the same one I received today via UPS and is in the new ResMed AirSense 10....waiting for me to come to bed!
And yes, the new tank fit in my older AS 10, and my old tank fit in the new AS 10. (I checked)

I took those pictures earlier, as I was cleaning out both tanks.
I packed up my older AirSense 10, with 16,600+ hours on it (5.8 years @ 8hrs a night avg), put it in the bag and it's in the closet as my backup machine!

Maybe tomorrow, I'll open up my new AirSense 10 and make sure they didn't put that new AirMini/AirSense 11 motor in there!!

I take it back, it looks like the AS 11 tank has a different, more rounded front profile, so I guess you have a new round bottom AS 10 tank. Very interesting. Thanks for the pics.

You're welcome...
I didn't mean to hijack your thread but it seemed like an appropriate place to wonder about the two different tanks I had...yet, I still don't know which one I could place in the dishwasher...if I ever elected to go that route.

On the S9, the (dish)washable tank had a heavier metal bottom,
which was more resistant to staining--plus the "regular" tank was built like crap.
I assume similar differences exist for subsequent models.
After the first, crappy S9 tank, I have only requested the washable tank.
More frequent replacement was allowed for the "regular" tank at that time.
No idea if this is still the case, but I choose the better tank even now.
