INSPIRE FOR SLEEP APNEA
INSPIRE FOR SLEEP APNEA
What's up with that? I don't know anything about it, except the commercials all throwing their cpap in the trash are impressive! Can this be a real alternative to CPAP for some people? Thanks much and sweet dreams!

Re: INSPIRE FOR SLEEP APNEA
This is a CPAP forum.
Sorry we cannot truthfully provide the rosy picture painted by their marketing department.
When the subject comes up, we see things like expensive, invasive, irreversible,
not covered by insurance, and not safe with MRI.
I have been using cpap for thirteen years with great results.
I see you probably have been pappin' even longer than I.

Re: INSPIRE FOR SLEEP APNEA
The Inspire procedure isn't something that everyone will qualify for. There are certain specific requirements a person has to meet.
Some testing is needed. I had a friend who wanted to try it but she didn't qualify. Something about where her obstructions were. I never fully understood it all.
If interested you need to talk to your doctor and get the referral started.
I don't know of any forum member here who has had it done and was successful.
This is a cpap use help forum after all. No reason for someone who had the procedure done to hang out here.

Re: INSPIRE FOR SLEEP APNEA
Key words and phrases for me are "evolving," "second-line," 'intolerant to PAP,' "uncertainties," and "select patients.""Hypoglossal nerve stimulation . . . is an effective and evolving second-line therapy for OSA . . . for patients with moderate-to-severe obstructive sleep apnea who are intolerant to positive airway pressure therapy. . . . There exist uncertainties regarding proper patient selection, surgical technique, and the reporting of outcomes and individual factors that impact therapy effectiveness. According to current guidelines, this therapy is indicated for select patients."--Published Online: December 1, 2021. https://jcsm.aasm.org/doi/10.5664/jcsm.9542
Personally, I am glad that there are a variety of options out there for patients who cannot, or will not, make a success of PAP, the first-line gold standard for successful treatment of OSA.

In the article I quoted above:
"Though the first-generation Inspire HGNS device on the market was not magnetic resonance imaging-compatible, the second-generation device is conditionally approved for magnetic resonance imaging scans of the head and extremities with a 1.5-Tesla magnet."
Re: INSPIRE FOR SLEEP APNEA
oh, good! it's "conditionally approved".lazarus wrote: ↑Tue Aug 15, 2023 6:55 pmIn the article I quoted above:

Just be sure to read the manual before you try it at home, kids:
"In the United States, if your patient has Inspire Model 3028, they are eligible for full body MRI scans provided specific guidelines are followed.

Re: INSPIRE FOR SLEEP APNEA
There was a ton of marketing in my area. Anything medical that is mass marketed gives me pause. I read reviews on other forums and would never, ever have this device implanted in my body and have small jolts to my tongue region when having an apnea event. Just ewwww!! That is just too creepy for this girl.

Re: INSPIRE FOR SLEEP APNEA
Just remember that, as a general rule of thumb, any non-PAP treatment for OSA tends to get filed by researchers under "success" if about half the people who use it reduce their problem by about 50%.
That doesn't make the alternative treatments totally worthless. But that doesn't make them comparable to optimized PAP therapy either. Honest researchers try to be up-front about all of that in published material. Yet the marketing people producing the ads very often try to make up for their products' limitations by trying to find ways to attack what actually works best.
