Denture Adhesive Strips v. Mouth Tape

I found in some records from way back in 2006 that some folks were using various denture adhesive strips to seal their mouth closed instead of using mouth tape. Have any of you tried this? If so, what were your results?

I am sick to death of trying mouth tapes. One I used for a very long time before realizing that it was not working well enough, and others that hurt like crazy to remove. I tried Hypafix which worked against the leaks but was torture to remove. Then I tried a hotshot kinesiology tape called Kinesio Tex Gold, which felt better on, but also hurt a lot when removed. I have been searching everywhere but am totally frustrated. I have ultra-sensitive skin and really hate pain.

Any ideas?

When removing them, don't pull them off. Peel them back.

Thanks, Granny. I've seen those but I don't think they'd work for me. I'm sure lots of air would flow out of the uncovered parts of my mouth. I used a lovely silicone tape for a long time and loved it. It's two inches wide, covers my mouth fully, and extends over an inch from where my lips end on each side. Some days it worked great, other days lots of air managed to sneak out and I had high leak rates. I'm going to use that until I feel ready to order something else. The denture tape intrigues me. Lots of folks loved it back in 2006. That old thread, either on here or on the Apnea Board Forum, was started by a guy who said denture cream worked better than tape for him. Then other people tried the Denture Adhesive Strips and liked it better yet because it wasn't so messy and stayed out of their mouths. If nobody comes up with something that seems better, I'll probably try it out. I'd still love to hear from people who tried it or who use it now.

Ya know what? I went back and read that long old thread. I'm gonna order some Denture Adhesive Strips and give it a try. I'm going to search for the best ones first. Then I'll report in on how it goes.

I used Poli-grip strips a while back.
They work very well, but I got out of the habit.
I cut each strip in half lengthwise, then each piece in half crosswise,
leaving short narrow pieces.
I would then put two of them on my wet lips, leaving a space between them.
Spit activates the adhesive, but they remove easily in the morning.
I need to try them again, as my mouth is not as wet as it was then.
Once, I woke up with one on my cheek.
It can be a fine line between glue and lube.

I ordered the Poligrip strips last night, and they are supposed to come today.

So just wetting your lips before you put them on was enough to hold them through the nights most nights? That sounds great! I thought they might be too thin to cut in half. I'm glad to learn that I was wrong. That will make them cheaper to use. I don't think I will leave any space between the pieces, I'm too much of a drooler. Also, I am used to having my mouth completely closed from taping. I can't wait to try them!

P.S. Do you set your lips together as you usually do with your mouth closed, or do you tuck them in a little as one does for mouth-taping? I just want to know what worked for you. Then I'll try it that way.

I like a little gap in case of a "reverse swallow," sneeze, or cough.

Normal mouth closure is more comfortable than a curl.

Thanks Chunky. I will just use regular lip closure. That makes sense to be, as it seems like without tape to restrain it a person's lips will fight to be in a more normal position.

Hey, with the two of us going back and forth on this, I kind of get a kick out of seeing our froggie personas showing up together. I guess my hubby is my alligator, and I think you refer to yours as your bullfrog. What can I say, I'm easily entertained.

Hardly any residues left and seals very well. Only issue is that you need to cut yourself since it comes on a roll.
Note that, with most tapes, you want to lower your humidity (best start out with none and then increase slowly again) since it can loosing up the glue and lead to mouth leaks.

Thanks Gfox. I think that is about the same as the Hypafix tape I bought and HATED. It hurt like crazy (for me, the wimp) to remove.

So, I used the Super Polident Denture Adhesive STRIPS (not the cream) last night with mixed results. I cut the strips in half lengthwise, then cut the thin pieces in half horizontally, as suggested by ChunkyFrog. They went on easily and stayed on all night. They were not uncomfortable just different, and I think I just have to get used to them as we all do with everything in pap use. However, I had fairly bad leakage, and need to overcome that. I'm going to try the strips not cut in half lengthwise tonight, and see how that goes. I do like the strips way better than tape, I feel hopeful that I'll get this to work for me. My pressure range is 12-18, so maybe the seal can have no tiny holes at all. Since I have been taping for some time I don't feel any need to allow any release of air. The strips come off very easily and with no pain at all. I did not have any goo in my mouth like the creams can cause. I am cautiously optimistic that I'll find a way to make this work for me long term. Yay!

Kind of, but the adhesive is like white glue--water soluble,
and the base is porous--maybe fabric.

Also, they are made to go in your mouth, so they are definitely safe to use. Who knows what chemicals may be on other two-sided tapes?
