CPAP aggravating bronchitis

Post by Icejewel » Sun Nov 12, 2023 7:05 am

Hello all, I'm new. Found this site while looking for solutions to this problem.

On Tuesday I was diagnosed with post-viral bronchitis. Since then I've been following Dr's orders. During the day I seen to get better, but when I go to sleep with my CPAP on I feel like I can't breathe well. Sure enough, I wake up with a migraine, severe coughing and wheezing, and O2 saturation around 81. My husband says it sounds like I'm hyperventilating with it on. I've tried changing the humidity level a few times, no help.

Is there something I can do or change to make this work? I know that if I don't use the machine, I wake up with the migraine anyway.

Welcome! Could you let us know what kind of mask you use?

When I have bronchitis, about the only time I stop coughing and feel comfortable is when I'm on my CPAP. All the years before CPAP when I had asthmatic bronchitis I couldn't sleep because I'd have to sit up in a recliner all night just to breathe. I can sleep and I feel so much better when using my CPAP. I do crank up the humidity, which seems to help me, but I understand it's not helping you.

I can't see why it would aggravate your bronchitis. Have you looked at your data to see if more or less pressure helps.

If you have a rescue inhaler, try using it right before bed to open your airways. If that doesn't help, talk to your doctor. It may not be the CPAP but something with your sleep in general that is going on as a result of the viral illness or bronchitis, and perhaps you need supplemental oxygen.

Please fill out your equipment profile - ucp.php?i=ucp_profile&mode=equipment_info

What do you know about reading your data? Do you know how to look at reports on the machine's display? Do you know how to use OSCAR?

CPAP should not aggravate bronchitis. To the contrary, it should help with breathing. I have a friend who uses one of her husband's CPAP systems when she has bronchitis. She says it is a big help.
