Resmed S9 ASV "Motor life exceeded"
So, last night I got the error message "Motor Life Exceeded." From doing some research I see it's a safety feature warning that I've put a lot of hours on the machine and it'll probably need replacing soon. I didn't look at my usage hours, but I have had it for 10 years, using for 5-7 hours per night. Since it's been so long I've got a new doctor and new insurance. (I've just been buying my replacement mask supplies from Amazon/Ebay.) Are they going to make me do another sleep study? I remember it being a pain and would rather not do it again if I don't have to. I want to try to get a replacement before this machine poops out or get a new one and keep this one as a backup.

Re: Resmed S9 ASV "Motor life exceeded"
Start by checking with your new insurance company as to what THEY might be requiring before they go buying you another machine. Each insurance company (and their myriad of different plans) may have different requirements.
The doctor won't know what your insurance might require and neither will any supplier.
Gotta go directly to the insurance company to ask what THEY need.

Re: Resmed S9 ASV "Motor life exceeded"
The motor for this machine is readily available on Amazon or Alibaba. It costs about 130USD from Amazon and less from Alibaba.
https://www.amazon.com/Blower-Compatibl ... B0C6T38TLN
https://www.alibaba.com/product-detail/ ... 69975.html
The replacement is not hard to do. Here's a video, don't be like Nick, please clean it thoroughly!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fpWD_5_YLzs
When I talked to my PPO and Medicare they told me that there was no need for a second sleep study... my doctor wanted one and I took one... big mistake, 500USD wasted... I 'failed' and a new diagnosis was given with an erroneous AHI number. A new sleep *titration* is good... this is where you sleep under pressure and a tech adjusts your pressures... perhaps your pressures have changed. Your machine is old enough that you are owed a new one, but unfortunately ASV machines are very expensive. I found that after my sleep titration I had met my deductible and am getting the machine for not much money... it is to your advantage to do this at the very start of your deductible year, since most insurance want 'rent to own' plans that stretch the payments past one deductible year, when the payments balloon.
Get a Resmed 10 ASV if you can... avoid the 11... too many issues to list. If you live in Central Texas PM me, I can help.

Re: Resmed S9 ASV "Motor life exceeded"
Last year I asked my medical doctor about getting a replacement CPAP to replace my aging Aursense 10. Since I provided him with my sleep study results from about 6 years ago, he went ahead and prescribed the CPAP.
As others have said, Insurance coverage and requirements vary widely. In my case I was able to get the CPAP with no copay because we had met the annual out of pocket maximum on our insurance coverage, Our policy covers 100% after that.

Re: Resmed S9 ASV "Motor life exceeded"
Thanks everyone. And thank you vandownbytheriver for the info on replacing the motor! I didn't even know that could be done. I most definitely could do that myself. Other than this error my machine has been working perfectly for the last 10 years so if I could get some more years out of it, I'm all for trying.

Re: Resmed S9 ASV "Motor life exceeded"
The "Motor Life Exceeded" message is triggered by run hours, and not any kind of diagnostic. So, your motor is not necessarily problematic, and the message will remain after changing out your motor.
Having said that:
Having said that:
- The motor is 10 years old, with about $22,000 hours so definitely has a limited life.
- The rest of the machine is just as old, and although the the motor is the most likely component to fail, it's not the only component to that can fail.
- Keep an eye out on the online buy/sell forums. ASV, while not common do show up every now and again. Some amazing deals are out there. I just picked up an AirCurve 10 VAuto for $450 CDN ($325 USD). Used one night, 5 run hours.

Re: Resmed S9 ASV "Motor life exceeded"
I have been getting the motor life exceeded message for a few months now. Currently have 23,499 hours on my AS 10. Everything is working perfectly. I have been happy with the machine and have no desire to change. The only exception is when I travel. I think a Mini would be a lot more convenient. But they are expensive. Looking for ideas/suggestions..... Should I just keep using my machine until it pukes? Or maybe replace it and keep the old one as a back-up? I'm old and retired. Will not go through sleep testing again. I know I have apnea and need cpap. Only have Medicare for insurance but don't use any insurance for supplies. Getting supplies online is easier and not at all expensive. Nearly new AS 10s are readily available in the $250-$300 range in my area. Would also like to hear from others who have experienced BIG hours and when these machines actual do fail..... Thanks Jim

Is there any way to reset the message? I have an Airsense 10.I notice some people mention replacing a battery too.Dog Slobber wrote: ↑Sat Jun 15, 2024 8:20 amThe "Motor Life Exceeded" message is triggered by run hours, and not any kind of diagnostic. Don't think so. Many have replace the motor, none have reported on getting rid of the message.prodigyplace wrote: ↑Sun Jun 16, 2024 4:39 am

The battery is the CMOS battery, it for the real time clock.
Here's a video on replacing the motor for an S9

Here's an S9 teardown post, that addresses battery replacement.

Re: Resmed S9 ASV "Motor life exceeded"
I would not recommend the Mini for anything but travel.
It has neither the sturdiness nor the sound deadening effect for full time use.
You would likely be alarmed by the noise, and may be relieved when/if it dies early.

Do you have a Mini? I have an Airsense 11 & I understand they use the same motor. I have not noticed any noise issues, but I usually use my CPAP without wearing my hearing aids.chunkyfrog wrote: ↑Sun Jun 16, 2024 12:15 pmI would not recommend the Mini for anything but travel.

It's possible your insurance might require a new sleep study for a replacement CPAP machine, but it varies. Contact your doctor to discuss options and maybe keep your old machine as a backup.

In my case, I gave a copy of my old study to my MD & he ordered a replacement under insurance, but YMMV.SirGaspAlot wrote: ↑Mon Jun 17, 2024 6:20 amIt's possible your insurance might require a new sleep study for a replacement CPAP machine, but it varies.
