My P10 Nasal Pillow "Walks"

Anyone have a suggestion for a nasal pillow mask similar to the Resmed P10 that doesn't walk across your face while you sleep? Something with more robust headgear.

The P10 is easily the least intrusive CPAP mask I've worn. I started out 2 years ago with a full face mask and have slowly walked myself down to a nasal pillow because I've learned how to sleep with my tongue against the roof of my mouth.

But the strap for the P10 is not "determinitive", meaning that it cannot keep the nasal block centered all night. Maybe if I slept like a statue it would work, but I flip a lot, causing the hose to pull the mask off target. I sleep so deeply with CPAP that I'm oblivious to the air leak from the dislodged mask.

Try the ResMed P30i

I use both the Resmed P10 and the Resmed SwiftFX. The SwiftFX has better headgear in the sense that it is much more adjustable and seems to keep the pillows in place better. But the SwiftFX also had exhaust vents that can feel like a jet stream blowing on your arms (or chest, depending on how you sleep). If you think you could tolerate a hose attached at the top of your head, you might want to try the Resmed P30i. While the headgear itself is basically the same as the P10, the hose tubing itself runs around your head before attaching to the pillows. Having the hose attach at the top of the head may reduce the weight of the hose pulling on the nasal pillows as you move around in bed. Note: I've never tried this mask as I don't particularly want a hose attachment at the top of my head---I like running the hose under my covers and along my body to help with rainout issues since I keep the house cold and the nose likes the humidity cranked way up most of the time. And then there's Pugsy's favorite mask: The Bleep Eclipse, which has no headgear at all, but you use a disposable pair of "halo" pads that are directly attached to your nostrils with a special adhesive each night. The nasal pillows hook onto the "halo" pads with magnets that should make the pillows easy to detach and re-attach during the night if you need to. Of course, you do have to buy a monthly supply of the "halo" pads since they are not resusable. A few additional thoughts. You might want to try a hose stand. And the Aloha mask has a bit more structure to it than the P10 and also has the option of routing the short hose to the top of your head. Finally, some people, like me, prefer the original Bleep, in case you try the halos and don't get along with them.

I agree with Granny: pay attention to the fitting instructions. Even Resmed's written ones. Where you place the lower strap is very important and makes a big difference.

Also: washing the strap and running it in the dryer correct the stretching out that happens with time.

Here are some of my random thoughts as a long time P10 user.

Be sure the mask is right way up. There is a rough strip on the side that goes under the nose.

Be sure to use the correct pillow size. Mine completely will the nasal cavities with them resting at the base of the sections.

I wear my straps with one going over the middle top of my head & the other around the base of my skull.

Try a new pillow. I had some sealing issues recently corrected by replacing the pillow.

Thanks for the great suggestions. I'll try both the SwiftFX and the P30i on my next "DME cycle", a term of art I learned from my sleep specialist.

Some enterprising young surgeon needs to perfect a surgically-attached strip of vecro under a person's nose that masquerades during the day as a mustache.

Or maybe 3M could invent a spray-on adhesive for your face that washes off in your morning shower.

All of my complaining about the shortcomings of the P10 is just an embarrassment of riches. 2 years ago at the start of CPAPing I swore I could not wear any mask on my face and nearly took the entire apparatus back to the DME. If I did stop I would probably be dead today from the atrial fibrillation that my apnea caused.

I couldn't live without CPAP today. You could test nuclear bombs around my bed at night and I wouldn't know it. I'm at sub 1.0 event per hour, roaming deep in a dream world I never knew before CPAP. I sleep so soundly I don't even get up to pee.

Every high BMI person over 60 should be tested for sleep apnea.

It's a myth that slim people don't have obstructive sleep apnea.

I don't agree with testing a large number of people. I do think everyone including youth should be screened at each physical exam. The doctor should also look at their jaw structure and calculate their Mallampati score. Doctors need to be trained to screen.

Dentists have the opportunity to suspect a possible sleep disorder
when a patient falls asleep during a procedure.
A little talk could save a life.

The author stated it was for a P10i to keep the rear strap from sliding up. I can confirm it also works with a Swift FX.
