difficulty breathing with airmini

Post by Dreamdoc » Sat Jul 20, 2024 9:28 am

I have a ResMed airsense 10 that I use at home and just got an AirMini for travel. It is set to the same range as my air sense. However, I feel like I struggle to draw enough breath on inhalation and also to struggle to exhale adequately. Has anyone had this problem?

What are your settings? Are you using different masks with the two machines?

my setting are min 5 max 8. Same as my airsense10. I use nasal pillows on airsense and use the nasal pillow for airmini. It feels like I'm meeting too much resistance on both inhalation and exhalation.

Same pillows models?

Those are very low pressures. At anything below 7, I get a feeling of suffocation on inhale.

If you are saying it is hard to exhale, that's hard to understand at such low pressures.

I use the pillow and humidifier specific to AirMini. I think the original settings were different (maybe had a wider range) but my provider set 5 and 8. I have mild sleep apnea--12 events/hr. The real difficulty is with inhalation.

You can get the adapter to allow you to use other masks with the Mini... but I think it takes away the ability to scavenge your breath's moisture... note that the mask for the Mini has no exhaust ports, they're moved to the 'moisture disk' part of the mask. You're re-breathing more than you would otherwise, that may be what you're feeling.

If you want more inhalation support you can turn EPR up and turn your pressures up... EPR for RM tends to lessen the effective pressure. Set 7 and 10 with EPR 2 and give that a try... you get the idea. If you already have EPR turned on you can try lessening it.

I'm going to ASSume you use a ResMed AirFit™ P10 Nasal with each machine.

Set 7 and 10 with EPR 2 and give that a try

I believe it was originally set at 7 and 10 and I was having the same difficulty. I took it to my provider because of that and he set it 5-8 to match my prescription. Also my provider suggested a heat moisture exchanger for airmini which I ordered but it doesn't fit.

What is your EPR setting?

There's something to be said for it when things are unsure as long as your MD is not opposed.
