Recall of resmed S8 machines

Post by rested gal » Mon Apr 23, 2007 6:54 pm

SAN DIEGO, April 23 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- ResMed (NYSE: RMD) today announced a worldwide voluntary recall of approximately 300,000 of its early production S8 flow generators used for the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea. In S8 devices manufactured between July 2004 and May 15, 2006, there is a remote potential for a short circuit in the power supply connector.

Patients should discontinue use of the device if there are any signs of electrical failure such as intermittent power, cracking sounds, sparking or charred smell. Patients should not use supplemental oxygen with an affected device; patients using supplemental oxygen should immediately contact their home healthcare provider for a replacement.

THANK YOU, RestedGal!!! One heck of a whole lot!!! My Resmed S8 Vantage is one of the serial numbers recalled - AND I USE SUPPLEMENTAL OXYGEN!!!

I'm going in to set up my S8 Elite in its place now. My Elite squeaked thru in between two sequences of numbers as NOT being a recall. *BIG SIGH OF RELIEF!*

RG

Gee this may slow their share trading a bit (was pretty hefty today despite any news)

I think I have at least 1 that qualifies but if they know I pulled it apart, they may tell me to take a hike but then ...

DSM

I'll phone the local Sydney office & say - hey I bought one of the affected units in the US (assuming it is one) - will you replace it for me

My bet is they'll say to me see that power board in the photo on your cpap web site, our chief inspector has looked at it and cleared it of any problems

I have one for sale, built in 2006 but luckily beyond the recall list serial #'s and perfectly safe, includes the 3i humidifier, Resmed card reader, and the Autoscan 5.7 software for $700. including shipping. 1440 hours on the Vantage, and works and looks perfect. Let me know. I'll be out of town for a week. Includes carrying case, filters, and all manuals.

Just thinking about the Resmed power supplies used in all their models. They are not quite the quality one gets in a Respironics cpap.

The S6, the S7, VPAP IIIs & S8 all appear to use the same rather old fashioned looking power board. My guess is they are cheap due to volume ordering & little change in their design over several years. One would imagine that by now with so many of these p/s units having been used, that they would know how to fit them.

This recall must be very embarrasing for them.

They may be old fashioned but it must be more complex because it can take 110 and 240V and it's all inside the S8. The M-Series has the power brick thing on the outside which makes it bigger so the internal power supply has less to do I assume.

Embarrassing or not, I prefer them telling me there is a problem then for me to find out myself.

My S8 is not on the list which is good to know.

RG,

Thanks for the heads up. Mine is newer than those so I'm OK.

DSM, I think the numbering is 20060707309

2006
07 (July)
07 (The seventh day)
309 Number 309 manufactured on that day.

hmm.....20060300030

If you went to the URL and followed it to the second URL it sounds like it isn't the machines themselves but rather the power cord that accompanied them.

If I'm understanding it correctly and that is the case, I sure hope the power cord isn't very expensive 'cause on accountta I can't remember when I set up my Vantage if I just used the Elite's power cord or if I pulled the Elite's power cord and packed it with the Elite and used the Vantage's power cord. *sigh*

I called the 888 number given and they had me verify my Vantage's serial number, confirmed it was subject to the recall and transferred me to a Recall Center - which didn't have all the pertinent information yet (I don't think she was even aware of the recall yet) and so will be calling me back with further information. (Naturally, since I have to go in town for at least a couple of hours for an appointment today and then tomorrow leave for KY for 5 days).

I know darn well my CPAP DME is NOT going to replace both cords!!! So I called my 02 DME. They weren't aware of the recall yet either BUT "if" it is the power cord, no problem, they will give me a power cord. So I'm to call them back as soon as I hear from Resmed's recall center - or if I haven't heard just stop in on my way to KY and pick one up then. I can't believe the difference between these two DMEs!!!!

Thanks rested gal for the information. Checked my machine and it was manufactured in 2005 and according to the numbers all of 2005 is in the recall.
I can't win anything other than being on the recall list.

Power cords can be purchased at Radio Shack for about $8.00, have two of them for when I travel and forget to pack the cord.

Made my first milestone last night, went over 1000 hrs. and I still am sleeping 8+ hrs each night. Finally feels good to be rested. Get to see my sleep Dr. this afternoon too.

Thanks to everyone for all the information here, which is making my experience now enjoyable.

Special thanks to pedroski, Auto Scan will be shipped soon.

Best regrads,

Fred

From another article:

ResMed voluntarily recalled the product after learning that in rare
instances -- less than two tenths of one percent (0.2%) -- a short circuit
in the power supply connector, a component supplied by a third party, has caused the devices to fail. In only seven cases worldwide, device failures have led to thermal damage to the device, with a remote potential to ignite material external to the device. No significant property damage or patient injury has been reported.
