Headgear and Hairstyles

Post by Theatre1sm » Thu May 24, 2007 2:30 pm

This may be a minor point - but it is truly irritating! I have a Respironice Comfort Gel mask with the premium headgear. https://www.cpap.com/productpage/respir ... -Tabs.html

I also have thick hair that is long enough to hang to my mid back. I MUST pull my hair back in order to use the mask - when I've tried leaving my hair down mask and gear just slide off my head with my hair movement. Generally I pull my hair into a ponytail at the nape of my neck and then pull my ponytail through the triangluar opening in the back of the headgear so I don't have a "moving lump" to interfere with the mask fit. Here's the irritating part - my ponytail then pulls the headgear down in the back of my head - making the mask tip into my face (at least that is what it feels like). I have to over tighten the bottom straps to keep a seal.

I tried pulling my hair into a higher placed ponytail (middle of the back of my head) but then can't sleep on my back at all or comfortably on my side either.

Has anyone found any other options? [/url]

my hair isn't as long as that anymore, but i have had the same problem...i find i'm more successful when i leave my hair down, pull the whole headear down over my face to my neck then pull it back up with the straps under my hair...i can't really get a second day out of my hair style anymore, and that sucks, but now day 2 is automatically a ponytail

works for me, don't know if it will work for you, but i hope that helps

Napping

I wish I could find a mask that would be good for naps and not mess up your hair!

Sleepyred, try one of those cannula styles with little or no headgear.

If you're just lying on your back, they look like they'd be fine. I'm a side sleeper, and they look like I'd be laying on the hose, so I've passed them by. But for hair issues, they would be the least troublesome.

Ahh, but I've known several guys with hair to their waists! Then again, I lived in the Flower Power days (as I would think many of us did here). Mine used to be down to my waist, now it's shorter than my son's and spiked

Can't help much with the long hair issue since my problem is more that my hair stands out all over the place after wearing the mask for any length of time, but I would think possibly a loose braid might help and be the most comfortable...

Maybe you can try a braid. That works for me - it can be started and the point where it would have to go through the space in your headgear. The nice thing about braids is that they lay flatter then ponytails and can keep your hair from getting tangled.
Just a thought
W
Pressure 7-9 C-Flex 3 AHI 1.6
Mirage Swift
Marine Mask Seal so my mask doesn't leak
Polygrip Strips so my mouth doesn't leak
Di-Oval for aerophagia
Eye drops for air coming out my tear ducts
Pur-Sleep so I can fall asleep despite all of the above.

I'm still having good luck with my mesh woven fabric burka type head cover that I just lay on top of my head and let dangle down the sides untied. It is just tacky enough to keep the straps from sliding but keeps my hair from getting tangled and really doesn't flatten it much. It's also very cool on my head. I first tried a satin sleep cap but it slid all over. I do also sleep on a satin pillow case so my head can just slide without straps or hair catching.

I slip the headgear on first, so it hangs down by my chin, then use a scrunchie to pull all my hair into a ponytail on the top of my head - yeah I know very pretty - then pull the mask up and in place - all the hair out of the way. My hair is very fine and to past my shoulders. If I leave my hair down the headgear slides around and my hair gets stuck when I roll over. I am a side sleeper. Seems to work so far. Only thing is the mask makes my bangs look crazy so they need to be re-done every morning. What price health? Good luck - it's trial and error as with everything - thanks to this site for all the tips!
