Listening to music with MP3 player to relax before sleeping?

Post by LukeIamYourFather » Sun Aug 05, 2007 9:28 pm

As if hooking up to a CPAP isn't enough, I use a Creative Zen (kinda like an iPod) to listen to music for 30 - 60 minutes before sleep. I use Shure E2C IEM (in ear monitor) as "headphones".

IEM are designed to fit snugly into the ear, which has two benefits: 1) it acts as an ear plug, blocking external sounds, and 2) it is fully sealed which prevents other people from hearing the sound (my wife does not like my choice of "relaxation" music)

For the curious that "need to know", I do not "hook-up" my CPAP or music until my wife and I are through chatting and "whatever" for the night

I find listening to my MP3 player extremely relaxing, and really miss it when circumstances do not allow me do do it (such as when I had my sleep study and titration!)

I started listenening to my MP3 player at night a few years ago, long before CPAP (started CPAP about a month ago). I'm glad I did, I think it helped me adjust to CPAP.

I have had relatively good success on CPAP from day one. I still wake up a few times a night, but when I wake in the morning, I feel 200% better than before CPAP.

I am not suggesting that this would work for anyone else, I am just curious if anyone else does this?

Currently using:
Fisher & Paykel HC640, heated, humidified
Respironics Optilife Mask
Innomed Hybrid Mask (to be used on occassions when nose is stuffed, etc)

My wife and I each have our own iHome. (I'm a hosehead, she isn't.) It allows you to play the music on your iPod through speakers both on a time while drifting off and as an alarm clock. I only use mine as an alarm clock. (It's great waking up to the dulcet tones of Pink Floyd or Don McLean! Oh, and BTW, the beginning of AC/DCs Hell's Bells is GREAT wakeup music! ) She often uses hers to listen to the radio when going to bed and listens to music she's loaded on her iPod as an alarm clock.

Doug.

I do every night as well, either a cd player or ipod. Most nights it's Led Zeppelin, which is not most peoples idea of sleep music but I fall asleep to it like a lulabye.

I've never found an earphone that the sound didn't bother my ears.

However, I've used music to go to sleep by for years. Even as a kid. Now I have a good sound system. I've put all my old 45 and 33 rpms, 8 tracks and tapes on CD and on my 'puter which uses my sound system. (Also some on a couple of 1 g flash drives for the car since my car still has a tape deck). I even have one old 78 rpm on it, "Ida" by the Joe Dolan Trio cut for me when I was a kid.

I used to use an IPod with earphones in case I woke up at night and couldn't go back to sleep. Getting to sleep was usually not a problem since I was so sleep deprived. But since starting cpap, I've not used them once. Getting everything hooked up is complicated enough. But now that you mention it, perhaps it will help me if I wake during the night and can't go back to sleep. This is rarer than it used to be, though.

I also use in ear headphones with my iPod to fall asleep. With my iHome style clock radio I can set the sleep time to 60 minutes until it turns off automatically, and then wakes me with music in the morning.

The only problem was as a side sleeper the earphones would bother my ears, but with a memory foam pillow, that problem is gone as well.

I found a small (Breadbox) boombox that plays mp3 cd's. I made a cd of mp'3 nature sounds that plays for 7 hours. worked great, until I put in a window A/C, now it's all the noise I need. Jim

I'm 59, and am almost embarrassed to admit that I often listen to Infected Mushroom and Juno Reactor also probably not most people's idea of sleep music.

It's also the reason I use the Shure EC2 earphones, which can only be heard the the wearer. (my wife doesn't particularly care for that type of "music")

I've been a big fan of doing this for a while. Did it at my titration study, though prior to being hooked up. I usually keep my iPod or a hand held radio and after I've finished with it, I leave it somewhere on the bed in case I want it again later. I did this from day 1 with my APAP. I also have the in-ear headphones which are nice and comfy. I have set playlists that I listen to at night and once they finish, the absense of the noise usually rouses me enough to turn the iPod off. It does help to mask the noise, which helped the first couple of nights until I got used ot it. I do it maybe three or four nights a week, usually if I've gotten to bed on time or a little early. It's a good incentive to be ready for bed when I'm supposed to me!
