Need recommendation for Nasal Pillow Mask for side sleeper

Post by Idget » Tue Dec 04, 2007 6:48 am

I have been using the Liberty with good results, but want to have another option of a nasal pillow mask. I ordered the Swift II and like it much, but I can't sleep on my side without pillows coming out. Tried fixes to no avail. I heard about the Opus having good success with side sleepers. Are there any other good choices for side sleepers. Would appreciate all those side sleepers using the nasal pillows to weigh in with their opinions.

On a side note, I recently told my brother about going on CPAP, he though maybe he should be checked. He went to sleep study and turns out his apnea is worse than mine. Good thing he checked. Our father died at 62 of heart attack after several over years and then going on kidney dialysis. Looking back on his snoring and "weird" choking noises, looks like he had sleep apnea also (of course untreated with bad results).

the headrest (used to be called the aura)...i've been using it for 7 months now and i love it...in fact, i broke mine the other night and i've been in mourning, chomping at the bit for my new one to arrive

i've tried the opus, but couldn't get a good seal; didn't really like the swift for side sleeping, but maybe the swift 2 is better; tried the breeze, which lots of folks on the boards really like and also the CL2 with direct seal pillows, which i used to love until i tried the headrest (aura)

of course, i only love it so much since i did the modifications i learned on the forum, but yeah, it's my first choice

good luck!

I've tried both the OPUS and the SWIFT II. I actually have a problem with both of them. When I lay on my side (which is my usual position), the pillows keep shifting. I've tried various fixes although I haven't yet resorted to duct tape or crazy glue.

The OPUS is very light weight and the pillows are smaller than the SWIFT. The problem I have noticed is that when I'm on my slide and move around, the straps pull at the mask and shift it. It seems it needs more support under the pillows, such as some form of chin strap.

My next thought is that the pillow I'm sleeping on might be part of the problem.

I'm a side sleeper most of the night, and the Optilife has worked better for me.

Headrest/Aura/Twilight NP is my favorite. If the headgear bothers you, you can remove it and simply tie the nosepiece to your face. That's what I did, and it's a very comfortable side-sleeping mask.

When you guys say you've tried fixes, please tell us what fixes you've tried without success. We might be able to reccommend something that you haven't tried.

I side sleep, use the Swift II (have used the Swift for 2 years along with trying other masks) I have no problems with the mask/pillows slipping. My mask stays in place all night and I believe Steve's (our fellow papper here) velcro tip is a big reason for that.

People's facial features have a lot to do with how a mask fits and stays put. Also deconstruction of a mask to best fit you personally has been talked about in many posts. We have some pretty inventive and creative people who have come up with so many fixes for so many masks. It takes time and energy to get that elusive perfect mask, but once you get a mask to work for you the rest comes easy.

Idget, if you consistently sleep on the same side all night, the Swift II is a good mask (I have one)... comfortable and a good seal. Note that the hose comes out of one side of the plenum or the other (your choice on that), so if you roll to the other side, you will most likely dislodge the pillows and get leaks from the side pressure of the hose fitting against your bed pillow. This picture will show what I mean:

If you roll in your sleep, shifting sides, then the Headrest is a favorite on the forum. Many here like it and the hose routes over your head. Another choice is the Breeze, which I have used very successfully for 18 months. The Breeze has its hose attached to the plenum at the top, and the hose routes over your head, so it is ideal for side sleeping, especially if you roll from side to side during the night as I do. Here is a picture of the Breeze:

(no, that's not me!).

I am almost exclusively a side sleeper & have found the CL2 nasal pillows to be the best for me. I have very low leak rates with this mask,& I find it very comfortable.

Greatly appreciate the replies. Would appreciate the link or where to find the posting on the fix for the Swift II. I really do like the Swift, but the problem wasn't the hose. I moved to one side and I only sleep on my left side. Problem is that when I move even slightly the straps move on side of face and that moves the pillows so they start leaking. If I can make the Swift II work I would stick with it as I don't want to start spending alot of money moving from one mask to another.

I side sleep and actually bury my face in the bed pillow at times and have used the Breeze Sleep Gear (with nasal pillows) quite successfully for well over 5 years. I use a deluxe chin strap which helps secure the headgear on top of my head. There is very little to no leakage and my AHI's stay below 2.

If the mask fits ... wear it!

Those of you who use the ComfortLite 2, have you also tried the Breeze? I tried the Breeze and didn't like it. It kept slipping off my head.

Do anyof you have problems with the ComfortLite 2 slipping? Surely it must be more lightweight than the Breeze.

I see it also has an option for wearing a cushion instead of nasal pillows.

Anyone care to comment on it? I might like to try one.
