How many experience night sweats?

Post by canyongirl » Wed Feb 06, 2008 8:54 am

I have had night sweats. The doctor says nothing is wrong. I keep my room a cool 65 (if possible). I live in cotton clothes and cotton bedding. My pj's are light, roomy, and comfy.

When I was without treatment (pre xpap) I would be up alot and sweat too, but would not be sleeping soundly enough, so I would cover and uncover myself. So I never got too sweaty because I was aware.

Now I find, the night sweats are more intense. SOmetimes I am all covered up and snugling in the blankets and sometimes I get them and I just have a sheet on over light pj's.

I wonder if I am less aware of my body temp due to deeper sleep with OSA treatment versus non treatment?

Anyone else expereince night sweats? any ideas about it?

thanks a lot.... I don't post often, but I do read the site daily. You guys really are a great community.

I had nite sweats before cpap treatment. When the sweats returned My VA sleep doc said this is not a sign of OSA. I thought is was a sign that my treatment was NOT effective.

I say I'm still having apneas when the sweats happen. My heart is doing an aerobic workout trying to get O2 out to my brain, etc.

JMMO,
I'll be interested to hear what others have to say.

A lot depends on your age. If you're at that glorious age of peri-menopause and early menopause, night sweats are just a part of it. Certain hormone supplements are supposed to help control it (estrogen, I think) but I've stayed away from hormone supplements. I sleep in a 50 degree room with light covers and I still wake up sometimes drenched in sweat. It isn't any fun. I recall now that I also had night sweats after I had kidney surgery when I was 29 years old. The doctor told me then that it was because I had been pretty much bedfast for a couple of weeks and when I returned to normal activity levels, the sweats would go away and they did. I didn't have sleep apnea at that time. It had something to do with my blood pressure dropping so low or something like that. After 30 years, I really don't remember too clearly.

I hope you find some relief but I really don't think cpap has anything to do with night sweats at all.

Tater Pie, I was thinking the same thing. Been dealing with night sweats or some form of it for years. Right now I rarely get to the point of sweating, as I wake up hot, throw the covers off, go to sleep, wake up cold, but covers back on, go back to sleep, wake up hot....all night long for the past few weeks. The past three night have been horrible with that. My data isn't bad, so I at least for me, OSA isn't a factor.

I used to read that soy is also supposed to help, but I don't know if that's still the case. I don't take it anymore though because of a thyroid problem.

Do you sleep on one of those foam-topped mattresses?

I and other's I know (male and female) can't sleep on them because we wake up either burning up or sweating, on and off throughout the night.

I suffer terribly with being too hot at night. I don't sweat alot, but I get hot.
This has been going on for years. I did take the hormones, hoping it would help, but it didn't.
I have gone to extraordinary lenghts to get comfortable at night. I keep the Air Conditioning on at 66 all year round! I have a fan beside me, and fan above me and a fan accross the room. I have spent thousands on special bed coverings, all promising to be "breathable". I have purchased a special bed, and an expensive mattress cover, claiming to keep you cool at night. I have special pillows and pillow cases. My comforter is made of voile cotton and weighs only ounces . I have bamboo sheets that are supposed to "wick away moisture".
I throw covers around , off and on , all night long.
The interesting thing is that the sweats and heat started right around the time my OSA symptoms started. The mask and humidifier make things worse, as the last thing I need is a hot rubbery mask on my face.
I beleive it IS related in some way, for some people. For others it could be medications. And some people just "sleep hot."
I would give just about anything for a solution. I wake up at 3AM , hot and sweaty every night, and then sleep fitfully after that. It can't be doing my therapy any good.

If your MD did not give you a test for TB (yes, it does happen to people) then he shouldn't be saying nothing is wrong. There are other conditions which can cause the problem too, but unless you're checked properly, you have no way to be sure what's going on.

Pre-CPAP, I had occasional "night sweats"......I'd wake up and my pillow would be soaked. I got into a habit of wrapping my pillow with a towel.

Since CPAP, I no longer have "night sweats", but I haven't given up the habit of wrapping my pillow with a towel......I found out it helps to anchor my full face mask in place so it doesn't slide around.

Hi,

Yes, if you sweat during sleep or wake up to toilet for urination, the reason is that "your heart is pumping very hard for extra load to bring oxygen to your body". At this circumstance your heart beat rate is very high as well. Given that all others factors remain constant, such as temperature of the room, matteress materials etc. You have OSA or having resproritory difficulty such as OSA. For long term this is destructive for your heart. Get the EGG check on your heart and also look at your sleep study resport on RLS etc. Take good care.

I use to have night sweats after my hysterectomy before I started hormone therapy, but now if I am sweating at night it just means the bedroom is to hot!

I'm 29 and I also have night sweats. I even wake up sometimes in the middle of the night because I feel like I'm burning up. My thermostat is set to 50 AND I use fans. My doc told me it may be weight related. I'm not so sure I'd agree, but who knows. I think some people may just generate more body heat than others, and when you trap it in in a blanket, you feel it. Ironically, this week I've actually been sleeping with a heated blanket on and I haven't sweated. hmm....

Buh-bye night sweats

Post by Captain_Midnight » Wed Feb 06, 2008 3:43 pm

Pre diagnosis, I had nightly bouts of sweaty wake-ups. I had no idea what OSA was, or what a physiological toll it was taking on my bod.

My routine was to flip the pillow over at each wakeup interval; and, yes, I would wake up feeling hot.

CPAP (and now APAP) cured that, for me.

If PAP therapy did not successfully treat night sweats, I would consider a new titration or a data-capable machine to ensure the therapeutic pressure is correct.

Regards all - - Tom
