nasal rinse

Post by madipy » Mon Feb 18, 2008 10:30 am

Anyone have homemade recipe for nasal rinse. Am waiting for all natural rinse ordered but really need help now. Unable to take over counter and Rx scripts because of reaction with other meds taken. Greatly appreciate any suggestions.

Hi,

IMHO: 1/4 teaspoon salt (*not* iodized) in 1 cup of warm water. If you find that feels like it's burning, add just a pinch of baking soda.

For more info, http://www.mayoclinic.com describes something similar.

I use this every night - works great for me

Mindy

What Mindy said! Some have posted that sea salt actually works a bit better! I'm going to try mixing as soon as my supply of premixed NeilMed packets are used up.

by 'all natural rinse' do you mean the NeilMed Sinus Rinse Kit? because you can get that anywhere: shoppers drug mart, rexall, walmart, zellers etc....this is the one i use and i think it works great (too lazy to mix my own )

but maybe you're referring to something else?

ditto what everyone else said. i used to use this recipe before, and i would squirt it up my nose with a needle-less syringe, like the kind you use to give a baby medicine. you could use one of those things you suck snot out of a baby's nose with too (you more child inclined people probably know the technical name).

I'll assume this rinse helps to clear the sinuses which I suffer from and will give this a try. (I always just referred to it as the snot sucker!)

Yep - and I swear it seems to help prevent colds (definitely IMHO!). I started with the NeilMed Rinse system and plan to keep using the squeeze bottle but mix my own now.

After about 2 years with a "snot sucker" I finally got my hands on a NeilMed squeeze bottle yesterday.

Much, much much more convenient. Definitely worth it.

My sinuses are a mess, so I end up using about two cups of water each time I rinse (which is not every day because I end up gacking stuff up in the sink for half an hour and my sisters are threatening to move out). I use half and half sea salt and baking soda (1/4 tsp each to two cups water), which works fine for me. I'm still toying with recipes.

For what it's worth, I asked my doctor about nasal rinses you can buy, and he said there's not any real benefit. If you can do it yourself for cheap, go for it. My nose rinsing habit cost me a whole $1.50 (for the snot sucker ).

Nasaline Nasal Irrigator

Post by BigGayBert » Tue Feb 19, 2008 5:56 pm

I also use the syringe, specifically the Nasaline syringe. Just type it into eBay or Amazon or what have you and it will pop right up. It gives you total control of the flow without having to hold your head all crooked.

Oh, and I also use 1/4 tsp salt and a pinch of baking soda in 1 cup of warm water. I have found that if I am really clogged up, 1/2 tsp of salt helps me clear everything out a whole lot better, but it does sting just a tiny bit. I use the more concentrated solution very infrequently.

By the way, I have heard that sea salt can have algae in it. I don't know if that's true or not, but I have heard it and it's fun to spread rumors!

UGH is this something I have to look forward to? I cant stick my head underwater so the sensation of water going up my nose (swimming pool) is not something that I am used to..

It's not bad at all - I found that the NeilMed kit is easy and fast. I now mix my own but still use the bottle.

The first two times I did it, it was a trauma. I was holding my breath, and felt like I was drowning. Once you figure out how to breathe out of your mouth while your doing this, it will become VERY EASY. Trust me. I'm a dimwit. But I can do this.
