What does "PSG" stand for? Titration?

Post by Twilightcat » Wed May 14, 2008 4:45 pm

Hi,
I have seen forum folks refer to "PSG." What does that stand for please? Also, what is the definition of "titration"?

Now that I've been learning alot from the forum, I would like to request copies of sleep reports from the sleep doctor, and I would like to phrase the request accurately.

Thank you,
Twilightcat

PSG = Polysomnography

Poly = multiple
Somno = sleep
Graphy = recording

ROUGH translations but you get the idea.

Titration = determination of the quantity

Again, rough translation, in other words determining how much pressure you need to keep your airway open whilst sleeping.

What you want is the doctor's dictated results report (1-2 pages) and the full scored data summary w/condensed graphs (5+ pages) for BOTH your sleep evaluation (PSG) and your titration studies.

What Slinky said.

Plus, if you encounter any reluctance on their part to provide you with it, just say the magic word, which is "HIPPA". They are required by law to give it to you, it is your medical record. Be nice, but insist. They can charge you for it, tho.

Depending on the context it may either mean that, or Polysomnogram.

PSG in the context of an act is Polysomnography, while PSG in the context of a artefact (the product of the act, in this case a report) is a Polysomnogram.

Its the same contextual usage as telegraphy and telegram.

Cheers,

Bill

When I had my first sleep study and then the titration, I was given (at the follow up visits) a 3 page report..The first 2 were the dr;s dictated report and the third page had graphs on it:1.Hypnogram showing sleep stages, 2.Respiratory showing apneas and hypopneas, 3. PLMs, 4. Oxygen saturation, 5. Body Position and 6. Arousals.

What more should I have received, and what would I use it for?
Thanks!
Trice
