What is the best way to wear a chin strap?

Post by kjarels » Wed May 14, 2008 8:19 pm

If I am using the activa, what is the best way to wear the chin strap. Should I put the mask on first and then the strap, or the chin strap first and then the mask?

The best way to wear a chin strap is wrapped around the top of the wastebasket to hold the liner up.

Chin straps are a poor solutuion for leaks and can cause the jaw to be pulled back. Taping or a well fitting FF mask are far better solutions. Jim

Chin straps work for some. Fotrothers, their comments are of less value. I have used a chinstrap for 5 years. Would not be without it. I have used it with an Activa mask for the last 2 years. Chinstrap on first, then mask. No difficulties and excellent results.

I've figured out how to ditch my headgear and attach my mask to my chinstrap. Easier all the way around.

But yes, the idea is chinstrap first, then mask.

I'm currently using the Deluxe Chinstrap from cpap.com. Works well, stays in place, and is not as hot and irritating as the Tiara Topaz, which I LOVE but which is hot and irritates my skin.

I have to wear mine tight. It is a Respironics deluxe and I also may alternate with an ace bandage(cheaper) for wrist/ankle that looks similar. I wear it back behind my chin so it keeps the jaw from dropping down. (I had a very sore jaw for a few days.) I also suction my tongue to the roof of my mouth. I can not sleep without the chinstrap. Be careful not to wear it on the chin as it will push the chin backward and may cause an obstruction or an apnea.

Since I discovered my chinstrap, I NEVER sleep without it. And, I never awake with dry mouth like I did before I started using it. Like almost all CPAP stuff, what works for some doesn't work for others. For me, the chinstrap is critical to my therapy.
