Pig Nose?

Post by Guest » Tue Aug 12, 2008 2:20 pm

I am interested in the nasal pillow system, but since it fits inside the nostrils and pushes out with pressure, is there any possibility that over time your nostrils could get stretched out? That can happen with other soft cartilage structures such as your ears. With everything else that goes on with CPAP therapy, I don't want to also look like something out of National Geographic. Any long term users out there notice that you are needing to go up one size on the pillows, or that people are starting to call you Porky?

I use the Swift LT. I really don't think this is an issue. I haven't noticed any changes to my nose. I can't remember anyone else on this forum commenting on a symptom like that. I never really thought about it 'till you mentioned it.

I've had nasal pillows up my nose for over 10 years now and can't see a difference, but wouldn't care if I could. Living is so much more important than looks.

If you're using nasal pillows correctly, they're not that far up your nose to cause any changes to any tissue. They're supposed to inflate and seal with pressure. While I'm not an orthopedist, I would think that it would take more pressure than that coming from nasal pillows to cause any permanent change. I do, however, have a permanent scar on the bridge of my nose from a full face mask which led me to nasal pillows and an AHI of 0.2. I'd rather risk looking like Porky Pig than going back to that hell again.

Oh, my, now...this is what I'm talkin' about! (First post on the new system and WOW!)

At any rate, I never measured my nares, nostrils, or any other part of my face before CPAP. Thus, although it may SEEM that my nares are larger, I cannot say that they are or are not any larger at all. Image Yes, I do use larger nasal pillows than I was first given. So do almost all of us, I should think.

The only time I've ever felt that I had a piggy nose was when I over-tightened the straps on my Swift. That would also cause a sore nose (especially an ache in the septum) throughout most of the next day. I figure that is the way to learn to leave the straps REASONABLY tight...NOT overly tight!

Thanks for your input - I figured when I posted this that I would get alot of "hamy" responses! But I can just see it now - in 10 years there will be a new epidemic of "daytime apneas" caused by "droopy nostril syndrome" in cpap pillow users. Sensing a business opportunity, ENTs will start offering $800 "nasal implants" to keep nose holes open once the nasal pillows have been removed. On the positive side, somebody will probably come up with threaded nasal implants which will allow you to screw your nasal pillows in, thereby totally eliminating the problem of mask leaks at night.

Alternately, I suppose there may be an epidemic of increased drownings among cpap pillow users due to the fact that they jumped into the water and could not keep the water from going up their pig noses. And then somebody will publish a medical study that concludes that "sleep apnea is associated with increased risk of death from drowning".......

Not a problem for me.

I went painfull pignose with my mirage swift. That puppy smashed my nose ap against my face like a pancake.
Thankfully, the hybrid lets my nose rest. There's no hard upward push against my nose.
