Humidifer????

Post by ginnylee » Sun Jul 10, 2005 11:01 am

I have absolutely no problems sleeping and have my on the CPAP for almost 8 years now. I have not used any type of humidifer for at least one year. I have an old humidifier I got with my machine that is not heated. I stopped using this because it seemed harder to breathe than w/o the humidifer. Now I'm noticing that my voice is getting more and more hoarse and I'm thinking it's because of the velocity of dry air that I'm breathing every night. Also, my throat sometimes feels dry and scratchy. I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions on a heated humidifer and the pricing. I had to drop my health insurance after I retired 1 1/2 yrs. ago due to the expense so I haven't been actively looking for a humidifer.......I'm on a Remstar CPAP and my air pressure is 14...........Thank you very much.[/b]

Well I have the Remstar plus C-Flex with the heated Humidifer and I love it. So far it haven't given me any problem yet. My pressure is 13 and I have no problem with the steady air that I get every night. So Try to get a humifier it might help with your throat

I use the fisher and paykel and always use it even if I am in a humid atmosphere.

https://www.cpap.com/productpage/fisher ... ifier.html

It is a stand alone humidifier and is fully adjustable so you can have just a little humidity or a lot.

I have been using mine for more than 6 years and i am delighted with it and would not be without it.

At a later date you may wish to consider a heated hose from australia which will prevent rainout. If my throat is particularly dry I turn the humidifier right up and the heated hose stops the moisture collected in the hose from gurguelling and my throat is great the next morning.

I do use my voice for a living though!
Hope this helps

The humidifier is called Fisher and Paykel HC 150 and is brilliant.

The Fisher and Paykel HC 150 that Fifi mentioned is the first heated humidifier I used, and is the one I've "come back home to" recently, after having used some integrated heated humidifiers with two major brands of autopap - Respironics REMstar auto and ResMed Spirit auto. Although I've used the PB420E auto (one of my favorite autos) PB had not come out with their integrated humidifier at that time.

Thank you all for your suggestions. I was wondering if my old CPAP (1997) would be compatible with these humidifiers......I went into cpap.com and I received the reply that an H2 humidifer would be good for my machine.....I looked at this humidifer and am wondering if it will hook up to my remstar choice CPAP.......I have this machine that doesn't look like many of the up-dated types........Thank you for any help you can give me......

I have a somewhat related question. I use a humidifier (not heated in the summer) nightly with no hoarseness, etc., but am considering buying a smaller, lighter CPAP unit for travel. I am rarely gone as long as two weeks, so I'm thinking that a non-humidified unit might work for me, and of course will minimize size and weight I must carry with me.

What is the experience of the board with the use of non-humidified CPAP for relatively short periods.

My pressure is 10, if that matters.

Thanks.

Hi JPZ,
Before you go off on vacation with no humidifier, why not try a few days without it at home? Peoples' reactions vary - some would never move without one, others find breathing much more difficult with one. Your own experience of sleeping without a humidifier will be the best guide.

Puritan Bennett's machines are the smallest around - and their integrated humidifier is light and compact - really no trouble to travel with.

Re humidifiers & lack thereof. I would be to scared to travel without one. I bought a used (near new) Sprit S-7 with 2i as a 2nd machine just to use for travel. I got an S-7 as I plan to upgrade it with the software upgrade that turns it into an S-7 spirit AUTO.

These units, esp the S-7 Lightweight, certainly look like good travelling machines. Anyone tried them ?

Cheers

I prefer heated humidification, but can do without any humdification at all, even "passive", if need be. As ozij suggested, just try it without at home for a few nights. Might not bother you at all to be without it. A lot depends on what mask one uses, too.

I have never used a heated humidifier but did use another non-heated one for a long time. I have had no humidifer at all for at least a year now and I've got to try one out due to my throat dryness and constant hoarseness.....Some days I can barely talk, esp. when I get up in the morning. I'm glad I'm retired now because when I was working I did interviews daily and there is no way I could now sit at a desk and interview anyone with no voice......My main question is...........I have a machine and don't want to buy a new machine.....I just don't know if these humidifers are all compatible with different machines or if I need a certain humidifer made for my machine............It's an old remstar choice.......Thanks........!!!!

Hi Ginnylee! Nice to see another Montanan on the board! The humidifier they recommended will work with any machine. You just need a short connection hose from the machine to the humidifier. It's mostly a convenience issue, the newer Respironics humidifier integrates into the setup a little neater and is controlled from the machines buttons. Best wishes!

If it makes you feel any better, it was 125 in Bullhead City, Nevada! Could be worse, could be there! I'm in Missoula, actually home in Stevensville. Scheduled to do some work at the Anaconda Medical Center soon. Take care!

I've got a barely used Fisher & Paykel heated humidifier (the one referenced above) that I'll sell for $50. Contact me if you're interested. It was literally used for about 2 weeks. Just upgraded to a machine with an integrated humidifier, the Fisher & Paykel HC211LE, and I no longer need the stand alone humidifier.

I can be reached at: blainefox@insightbb.com or 815-505-4015.

Thanks!
