Swollen Uvula
Swollen Uvula
I just had the Septoplasty, turbine reduction. So now I can finally breath better. However, I noticed that since the operation a few days ago, that when I swallow, my uvula flaps. Also, when I clear my throat, I can position my uvula over my tongue. I was never able to do this before the surgery. Something happened during the surgery and I'm scared. The doctors said not to worry, it should go back to normal. They said it's just swollen. Anyone have any idea of what is going on.
Re: Swollen Uvula
From my understanding, this type of surgery generally has nothing to do with the uvula. I would think the swelling is in fact related to the surgery and should certainly go down over time. I wouldn't think the Doc would say that if he didn't mean it. I wouldn't worry, just give it time. Congrats on the surgery.

Re: Swollen Uvula
Isn't that the darndest feeling? Mine swelled up once when I had a bad case of Strep throat and I thought it would drive me batty before it returned to normal. Trust me - it will return to normal soon.

Re: Swollen Uvula from Septoplasty
thanks for the input. My throat is also now soar. So maybe it's an infection from the surgery. I feel better now since i know it's a possible infection and not a long term problem with the uvula. Also, the apnea has improved now that I can breath through my nose after the surgery.
Re: Swollen Uvula
giantred,
Good to hear you can breath better now!
I'm not a doctor, and I know nothing about the possible effects of the surgery you underwent. So what I'm saying is general.
Don't confuse an inflammation with an infection. An inflammation - hot, red, swollen may be an normal response to the trauma of surgery.
An infection - same symptoms, caused by germs in your body is something all doctors try to avoid after any surgery - if you think you may have a sore throat (strep throat or whatever) as a result of an infection do talk to the doctor again.
Strep throats are often tonsil infections. I once had a pharynx infection (sore throat, pain and a lot of difficulty swallowing, even my tongue hurt...) and I know my doctor took that very seriously indeed.
Don't let us diagnose you, if you're not sure of what your doctor told you - ask him/her to look at it. Ask for a second opinion. but don't rely on us.
