Has anybody tried a Millet Hull pillow?

Post by greenvelvetdragon » Mon Mar 16, 2009 12:58 am

There has been much discussion about the buckwheat pillow as of late, so i went searching for one in Australia, and found one what looks to be comparable to the pur-sleep option in relation to content and quality but zero in relation to the price that a few others noted on the buckwheat thread.

While i was searching i stumble upon a millet hull pillow which "seems" to laud better in terms of less noise, comfort and therapeutic benefits. I found this on http://www.milly.com.au/. I am wondering if anyone else has tried this type of pillow and can give me some feedback; what peoples thoughts are and if anyone has a comparison between buckwheat and millet hulls??? always in search of the perfect pillow and i love to research before i shell out serious cash for the latest and greatest.

and before Rooster or SAG beats me to it, the one thing i do know about millet is that i used to feed it to my cockatiel.....

thanks and cheers

Damn. Another missed opportunity.

Oh well, Rooster should be able to come up with a good line about "millet", he usually eats that stuff up.

Interestingly, these guys make a combination product, but yeah, the shipping thing again.

Aromatherapy may help CPAP compliance. Lavender, Mandarin, Chamomile, and Sweet Marjoram aid in relaxation and sleep. Nature's Gift has these and a blend of all four called SleepEase.

Very interesting. I have never heard of a millet pillow. I used to feed millet to the birds as well.

I love my buckwheat pillow. Millet sounds interesting.

I found this comparison:

Buckwheat Hulls vs. Millet Hulls

In comparing the two types of hulls, we have found that millet hulls provide a slightly lighter-weight pillow which is softer and smoother than a buckwheat hull pillow. The millet hulls, however, do not hold their position as well when shaped. Buckwheat hulls give a soft sound when shifting; the millet hulls are quiet. Hulls allow air to move through the pillow, and will keep the head at a comfortable temperature for better sleep; due to their shape, buckwheat hulls provide better airflow. Both types of hulls are durable and long-lasting and have a pleasant natural fragrance.

And this site has a pillow that's one side of each

I've never tried the millet hull pillow but I made the mistake of wasting my money on a buckwheat hull pillow: too hard, too noisy, not at all comfortable. No one I've offered it to liked it either. I like my down pillows and my PAPillow. I like the softness of the down, the ability to punch it into any shape I want and its settling down so much thinner than other pillows (whiplash residue doesn't like a medium to thick pillow).

Both millet and buckwheat hull pillows are great. Buckwheat provides firm support and does not compress throughout the night. So your head stays put without shifting. Same goes for millet. Bucky makes great millet bolsters and U-shaped pillows, a combo buckwheat/millet pillow, and pure buckwheat pillows.

thanks for the info i like slinky am concerned about the comfort and noise, i cant use down they make me sneeze....but i have been experimenting with my buckwheat heat pad which is quite large and for naps its been ok. from what i have been researching millet seems to come in as "softer, quieter, same benefits as buckwheat". I am going to ring the OZ company today to talk to them further as this pillow is not cheap $89.00AU but no postage charges (that is a plus) and they seem to be the only one in Oz that has millet....

the US combo pillows look cool but between the difference in the dollar values and the incredible amount it costs to post things to the bottom of the world, its just not worth it.

if i do end up with millet, i will keep you updated...and i will have to figure out a way to keep the birds away from it

cheers

I have used a buckwheat pillow with CPAP for 5+ years. It took a week or so for me to get used to it but now I do not want to sleep on anything else. It is firm and you can shape it however you like. I'm a side sleeper and it makes it easy to hang my mask off the edge of the pillow. I have allergies and haven't had a problem with them since using buckwheat (but CPAP helps with that too). My buckwheat pillow is a big part of my sleep management strategy and I would not do without it. Pillows are very personal so what works for me might not work for you. My wife who is not on CPAP is now using a buckwheat pillow and she likes it so much she takes it with her on trips.

I have used a U-shaped millet-hull filled pillow on and off for a few years. I really like it. I bought it for neck support.

One caveat....it really works best when you are really tired and will sleep soundly without tossing and turning. It is good only for sleeping on your back.

The pillow I have has a zip-off outer cover that can be washed...a nice feature.
