OT- Need Prayer for my Husband's Hip Replacement Surgery
Hello All,
I haven't posted in a while but I am always hanging out reading!
My husband is going to have his "Hip Replacement Surgery" this Tuesday, March 31, 2009 in Arroyo Grande, Ca. with a great surgeon, we have to travel about 120 miles to get there and he will have a 2-3 day stay in the hospital, we are (BOTH) scared out of our wits, the surgery was supposed to be in a month from now (locally) but they called today and said to come on monday to do the registration thing & blood work, etc... And we we're just shocked
I am asking everyone to please to pray for my husband "Mike" and please throw a prayer in for me "Shirl" as well, , we are so stressed and scared... This is a major operation and he's known for at least 20 years that this day was coming and it has finally arrived, ew! Thank You soooo much in advance!
Also, if anyone on the forum has had a hip replacement, please share your experience, we will leave town Monday so the last time I will be able to reply to your posts will be on sunday March 29th., and we need all the support & advice we can get before leaving!
I also heard that one other forum Wabmorgan is having Knee Surgery tomorrow so please throw a prayer in for him as well...
Thanks guys,
SleepyNoMore/ShirL

Re: OT- Need Prayer for my Husband's Hip Replacement Surgery
I think hip replacement has almost become routine so try not to worry so much. I know many people who have had successful implants and go on to much better quality of life. I myself might need knee replacement down the line but some weight loss has helped my knees tremendously. I am praying for your husband and you also. He'll be fine and up and walking in no time.

Re: OT- Need Prayer for my Husband's Hip Replacement Surgery
Hello Shirl,
I will be happy to say a prayer for your husband's surgery as well as the anxiety that you both are feeling.
I have not had hip replacement, but my mother has and I was with her through the process in the hospital.
I know that she was pretty much on pain relief drip the first few days and slept a lot. She had a pressure pack, I do not know what they call it, on her legs to help prevent clots from settling in her legs. She did have muscle cramps and I massaged her muscles in her leg some with lotion after they had the pressure pack off. She was very thankful for the support. I suggest you bring a book or something to keep your hands and mind busy while your husband sleeps. I was the advocate for whatever she needed from the nurses. She got better care because I was there to talk to them for her. I always kept in mind their busy schedule and tried to not bug them, but when she needed something, I was persistant. They really responded well. I also told them how much I appreciated all that they were doing for her. I would say the whole experience was a positive one for both of us.
They try to get them up and moving pretty soon in PT. She needed encouragement to bear the challenges, but it was what was best for her recovery. I was a cheerleader when she started walking again, it felt a little like a reverse role that she had probably played when I was a year old.
The recovery is slow, and the first few days were a bit stressful because we were in the hospital and all that entails. She is very very glad she did it, and the pain has long ago disappeared.
I hope this helps you a bit. God Bless you both, and take care.
Karen

SleepyNoMore - is there anything I can help recommend as far as bath safety etc; equipment for his recovery? Is the hospital 'setting you up' with any rental stuff?

Re: OT- Need Prayer for my Husband's Hip Replacement Surgery
I personally have not had one, but a good friend at church just had his second one on the 9th of this month. His first, on the other leg, was a couple of years ago and went so well for him that he was excited and could not wait to get this second one done. He was home in a few days, and does his therapy diligently. He was climbing the stairs at home within a week.
There is some discomfort after the surgery of course, but according to our friend, it was nothing compared to his pain before the surgery.
Prayers are on for you.

Shirl, it's going to be great. I just know it. These surgeries are so far advanced now. It's going to be smooth sailing, and a great recovery and an even better quality of life in the future for you both.
I pray for your strength and serenity during this time. I just know it's all going to work out well.
Huggers,
Barbara

Re: OT- Need Prayer for my Husband's Hip Replacement Surgery
No experience myself, but my father-in-law had a hip replaced. He USED to walk only when necessary, and only with a cane. Now he not only walks, but he danced with his grand-daughter at her wedding last fall!
I know it's not "routine" when it's you or a loved one, but the procedure really has been de-bugged over the years.
Prayers and happy thoughts are on their way to you AND the doctors working their miracles...
EDIT: I failed to mention that, at the conclusion of the dance, they got a standing ovation...and not a dry eye in the place!!

Best thoughts to you and your hubby.
I know a couple of folks who had hip and knee replacements and are doing great. Therapy is rough, but if he keeps it up, then the overall outcome is much better from what I understand.

Re: OT- Need Prayer for my Husband's Hip Replacement Surgery
OMG,
I LOVE YOU GUYS!!
Thank You so much for the Prayers, Good Wishes, and Advice each and everyone of you have given to me and Hubby!
We appreciate it so much.
Actually, I got online at Costco.com and ordered the elevated toilet seat and the Tub Chair, and I ordered a huge tub mate to go under that chair, and then today, well yesterday I went to Rite-Aid and bought him a Cane...Mike said it was a c-o-o-l cane, he also said he feels like "House" At least he's trying to "snap hiself out of the stress and all over this surgery", Wow, he's stronger than me, my septum & turbinate surgery was scarry enough, geez, I'm really a wimp when it comes to pain.
This has all happened so quickly, wasn't supposed to be until the end of next month, i'm so tired, i've only had a few days to get this trip, etc. all planned out.
I want to thank each and everyone of you indivigually, this is a wonderful crowd of fine caring people and that's why I stay here and will never leave this forum, everyone has helped me from day 1 , since Sept. 2007, so I LOVE YOU GUYS and I will post a report in about a week and a half or two and give you an update on hubs and his experience until them, stay safe and keep those "masks" on...
PS- Mike said "Thank You" from the bottom of his heart ... He REALLY APPRECIATES it..
