Respironics Smartcard Reader / Encore Pro

Post by gbuskirk » Sat Mar 28, 2009 4:50 pm

I bought a smartcard reader (DT-3500) and picked up Encore Pro 1.8.49. I tried to read the data off of my smartcard. I saw compliance data one time...then I think the card got corrupted. It failed to read it again. My Series-M Auto would only beep when I inserted the card - a smartcard error. I had to run with no card last night.
Today I erased the card, and programmed it with my prescripted settings again. It seems to be able to read it repeatedly. I will try it in the machine again tonight.
What are the implications of having wiped & re-initialized my smartcard? The patient number and personal data may be different. I don't have any re-checks with the DME scheduled, so I don't know how they'll ever know.

As long as your DME doesn't have to track you, none. No need to put the script on the card, the machine remembers what it had before, the card script is just for making a change remotely. Sometimes when you put the card back in the machine it messes up as the contacts align, to cure that put the machine on a power strip and shut it off to insert and remove the card. (No power spikes) Usually I just grit my teeth, and push it in. Jim

I am sure you did this already but make sure you put the card in the correct way. It will go in both way and one way will work the other it will beep for an error.

After clearing the card and re-initializing it, all is well. It is capturing data and I have been able to read reports with Encore Pro.

Just noticed that this thread is for Encore Pro users. My software is Encore Viewer - v1. I don't know if that makes a difference with the repsonse to my question.

I don't think the beep is necessarily an error message - mine beeps everytime i remove the card and every time i reinsert. I have not lost any data so far, nor has it given me any problems. I have acutally taken it out, read it using viewer, reinserted it, and then less than 15 minutes later removed it to use pro for trend and analysis. Again, no probs - but beeps each time.

It does make a difference. With Viewer you can not erase the card but Pro can. I have had better luck using the utility that you can download at mycpap.org. It not only erases but it reformats the card as well.

What are the implications of having wiped & re-initialized my smartcard? The patient number and personal data may be different. I don't have any re-checks with the DME scheduled, so I don't know how they'll ever know.
Is the machine yours yet, or are you still renting it due to Medicare or Insurance requirements?

If you are still renting and it is officially not your machine yet . . . there could be a problem if your data is gone. Medicare needs data to prove compliance.

In Kentucky, Medicare checks cards at 30 days, 60 days, then at 6 months and maybe more, I've forgotten. So I have to be sure I haven't erased or there could be a problem with Medicare. In Kentucky the machine isn't "owned" by the patient until 13 months.

I was/am on Medicare in Texas and I never had anyone even ask me whether mine had a card. My Doc and DME did not have the program to read it. After 6 months I got curious and found another DME that read it and gave me a copy. I know things may have changed since then (Dec 06). Medacare and insurance bought to many machines that ended up in the closet, and were sold a few years later. Did get one call from the DME during that time,"are you still using It?" "Yes". That was it!

I should have checked my Respironics manual first: on p.5-2, under "SmartCard Error" it says (paraphrasing) if you get continous beeps, all 3 backlights flashing and a flashing SmartCard icon on the screen, the card is either inserted improperly (mine isn't) or the data on it may be corrupt. I called my home care provider and they are going to replace the card. I'll post the results.
