Banana helps Sleep Apnea Patients (keyboard damage alert)
Re: News Item: Banana helps Sleep Apnea Patients
Borrowed from a comment in another apnea support forum:
"the article it says it uses 130 grams... so I looked up what the average banana peeled/skinned weights,
which was 4 ounces or 113.398 grams. 5 ounces is 141.747 grams btw. So, I'm guessing 1-2 banana's would be fine."

Re: News Item: Banana helps Sleep Apnea Patients
The other thing about bananas is they are high on the glycemic index and would cause a spike in blood sugar -- good for going jogging, but not so good for falling asleep.

How many banana smoothies before blimphood?
O yaw a lifetime.
Do you increase smoothies just like pressure settings?
Maybe this will be a new line of work Banana Apnea plantation.
Another thought Smoothie will get reduced to high priced pill.
The we'll all pay through the nose.

I just got told about this news item from someone who heard the story on TV in NZ.
It is novel
Well, I'm always interested in nutritionally related issues. Unfortunately, the article does not specify whether theywere using green or ripe bananas...
...with my luck, they used green ones, and I can only have very ripe ones. There is a difference. (Ripening changes the polysaccharides (starches) and disaccharides into mostly monosaccharides.)

I currently have a stash of Nasal Aire II cannulas in Small or Extra Small. Please PM me if you would like them. I'm interested in bartering for something strange and wonderful that I don't currently own. Or a Large size NAII cannula.

Re: News Item: Banana helps Sleep Apnea Patients
Okay I read it.
#1) Banana smoothie - IDIOTS!!!! The mucus buildup from the MILK is gonna make you choke. Stupid stupid stupid.
#2) I ate a Banana last night before bed, and had a bad night. Lots of leaks. Should I blame the banana? Probably not. More likely the mask's fault.
#3) Can't hurt to eat a banana before bed and check your stats and keep a log. But skip the smoothie part.
That's my take on all this.

Whew, Babs, I was afraid you were going to come up with something like, "Is that a banana in your throat, or are you just glad to see me?" Quite a relief that you showed such restraint.

Maybe not. <g> Homemade yogurt, fermented for 24 hours or more, denatures the milk protein and removes almost all the lactose. Many people who would otherwise react as you note don't react to properly prepared yogurt and ripe bananas.Babette wrote:#1) Banana smoothie - IDIOTS!!!! Depends on what ELSE you were doing that could dislodge the mask!#2) I hate a Banana last night before bed, and had a bad night. Lots of leaks. Should I blame the banana? Probably not. More likely the mask's fault.
Why not banana and coconut milk?#3) Can't hurt to eat a banana before bed and check your stats and keep a log. But skip the smoothie part.

Depends on what else you have with it.araminta wrote:The other thing about bananas is they are high on the glycemic index and would cause a spike in blood sugar -- good for going jogging, but not so good for falling asleep.
When I was healing from my surgery, I kept ripe bananas by the bedside. I ate one before I turned out the light. And about four hours later, I would wake, starving, and eat another.
I ate more bananas, and, of all things, tomato juice, during that time.

Kiralynx, there's no way I'm gonna make my own yogurt. I can't be bothered to wash my own dishes, make my own bed, vacuum my own floor, etc.
Nothing against bananas and coconut milk at all.
Perhaps it was hunger waking me up last night?
LOL,
B.

Did I say anything about housework? <g> Cooking great food isn't housework... I get someone else to do the dishes!Babette wrote:Kiralynx, there's no way I'm gonna make my own yogurt. I can't be bothered to wash my own dishes, make my own bed, vacuum my own floor, etc.
Bananas, Tropical Traditions coconut cream, and some water, whizzed up in a blender....Nothing against bananas and coconut milk at all.
You'd be surprised...Perhaps it was hunger waking me up last night?

That is what I was thinking when I posted earlier that I couldn't wait to see what Babs has to say about this one!! Just knowing some of her past posts about things of this nature...
We love ya' Babs...you always keep the humor in our therapy.

Re: News Item: Banana helps Sleep Apnea Patients
I just can't imagine that the phospholipids are what is needed in our throats to hold our airways open...it doesn't make sense to me. I also can't imagine dripping banana smoothie down a babies endotracheal tube to help open the airways, but it WOULD be a whole lot cheaper than what we use now...wonder what the insurance companies would say when they are billed 500.00 for a banana!!
Re: News Item: Banana helps Sleep Apnea Patients
Having thought about their research, gotta say it won't change my eating habits but I do love bananas.
Here are some banana recipes ...
1) An all time fav in Aust - toast, butter, vegemite (or marmite) nice & thick & ripe sliced banana - to die for
2) An equal to die for meal - bananas wrapped in bacon & grilled til bacon cooked - (swoon)
3) A big fav here in Aust is having sliced banana & dessicated coconut as a dressing on Indian curries
4) In HK they have these tiny bananas called 'lady fingers' to foreigners they look odd but the flavor is special
5) The Tongans (from Tonga in the pacific) grow 'green' bananas & have them with raw fish & coconut milk
Of course there are the banana drinks & even banana smoothies come in big range of mixes
Anyone else got some unique recipe ?
