Bite my tongue...

Post by skitzie » Tue Apr 14, 2009 11:30 am

I am waking up in pain every night because I am actually biting down on my tongue! I'm gonna bite it off one day. What can I do about this? I use a Mirage Active mask.

I have that happen sometimes. It occurred more in the first weeks of treatment when I wasn't as relaxed. It rarely happens now.

Are you biting it hard enough to draw blood?

A while back I experimented with some inexpensive "boil-n-bite" sports mouth-guards....available for a few bucks at our local Academy Sporting Goods store. My purpose was to try and fabricate sonething that would help keep my tongue against the roof of my mouth...so that I could use a chin-strap instead of mouth tape...to prevent mouth leaks.

I didn't succeed...but, you might...simply because all you're trying to do is keep your tongue from getting chewed up.

Give it a try......Ten bucks or so might solve the problem.

I don't know how to respond to replys/suggestions to my posts!!! In any event, I have been on therapy for like 4 yrs and never did this in the past. Just the past couple months. Not drawing blood, but I really clamp down on it...it hurts really bad. The first time it woke me up, I didn't know what it was that was so painful...when I realized it was my tongue, I was like "WHAT?"...Maybe stress related, I don't know.
Thought about some dental guard or something, never moved forward on it though...thanks, I'll have to try it, I have to try something! I also wondered if I should be using a full face mask???? It's a enigma for me right now.

Hi! Just wanted to report on yesterdays post. I had a titration done last night at the sleep lab. Doc said I better cuz I felt so lousy. I hated to do it d/t to the cost involved and my high deductible.
They increased my pressures and tried the new Mirage Activa LT mask. Feel like I slept better, and I didn't bite my tongue! (heehee) I was mindful of it trying to slip between my teeth initially, but didn't experience what I had in the recent past and actually did well throughout the night.
It was a real 'search and destroy' mission to find the activa mask that I was using.I tried several for a big hit to my wallet (as I'm sure you all know).
When I ordered it, according the their sizing suggestions, I just ordered the 'standard' size. Then I find out it was not the 'right sizing'!! I needed a smaller one. I found out last night that the standard was the smallest they offered at the time. I thought it was okay, although it did seem quite large on my face. I thought it was the frame that was too big for me, not the mask. I was willing to accept that, because all the others excoriated my face, left marks, leaked and/or blew air into my eyes, or were just plain uncomfortable. I like the Activa cuz it 'sucks' right up to your face and has almost an accordion-like billow that minimizes potential leaks (pressing against your pillow) when you sleep on your side...and it leaves NO marks (red or otherwise) on your skin!
I did require an increase in pressures. So I'm happy that I went and found that out plus discovered the prob with the mask....at long last
So, the combo of higher pressures and a mask that actually fit correctly did the trick. Now I have to figure out how to adjust the pressures to what they used last night. I did see directions on this site explaining how to get into the settings. I'm gonna try it.
I so appreciate this site. I just recently became aware of it. (((BIGHUGS))) to all, and Sweet Dreams!
