Homemade pillows? No, not nasal pillows!

Post by Rosebud » Mon Apr 27, 2009 7:55 pm

I was wondering if anyone had a pattern for a homemade pillow that has worked well for them. I use a tiny pillow, but it was really not meant to be slept on every single night, so after just over a month, it is compressed into something quite thin. I just cannot sleep with my regular pillow, and can't see shelling out such big bucks for a simple pillow, when I can probably get my sister to do a little sewing for me and be done with it. I can't use a memory foam, as it has proven to be way too firm for me; another reason homemade will work better for me in the long run. I'd rather experiment with different thicknesses and densities this way too, than to try different ones that are so pricey. Anyone?

A very simple pillow would be to cut two squares of rectangles the size you want, stitch around 3.5 of the sides, turn it inside out, stuff to the degree you want, and then whip the remainder of the side closed.

A slightly more complex one would be to cut the squares or rectangles, then a 2-6 inch strip which is applied to the edges of the rectangles to give it more even lift.

I don't have time to point you to a bunch of stuff, but there are simple patterns available for upholstery and decorating at most sewing centers.

http://www.allfreecrafts.com/sewing/pillow.shtml could be one starting place for the pillow I mentioned first.

You might want to search for pillowpal by pjwalman - it is a big H you put on top of a pillow

this is one picture she posted

My sister in law made me two of the pillowpals and they are great!! I love them!! If you pm pjwalman she will email you the pattern, then if you sew, or know someone who sews, you can whip them up in no time. I think it took my SIL 20 minutes from start to finish for both of mine.
