Nipple Grease...

Post by LinkC » Mon Jun 15, 2009 12:56 pm

Now that I have your attention--

Those of you who use Lansinoh to improve sealing of nasal pillows: Do you apply it to your nostrils or to the pillows?

I've been rubbing it around the rim of my nostrils, but find it awkward to apply without getting it everywhere is SHOULDN'T be. So, last night I just rubbed a little around the "seal" of each pillow. The seal seemed just as good and I didn't end up with a greasy nose and upper lip.

I haven't tried the Lanolin yet. I did get the Ayr gel and it was so slippery it didn't do anything good. I don't have a problem with tenderness. I was more interested in getting a better seal.

I use a cotton swab to apply Ayr Gel or anything else to my nostrils. I also use just a small amount and put it just inside my nostrils. It goes where I need it and seems to seal fine.

Putting it on the nasal pillow itself should be fine though.

When I use the Lanisoh I apply to my nose -- but hey, whatever works best for you!!! If applying it to the pillows works better, then that's what you should do!!!

cheers

I used it on my nares for my first month or so and then one day I didn't use it and I discovered my nose was just fine without it. I'm glad because that is just one less thing to be concerned about.

I've tried both ways and both seem to work. I put a thin coat of Lansinoh inside my nostrils because I get nasty nose bleeds when I use Ayr Gel. Only a little of the Lansinoh ends up on the rims of my nostrils. I find that less messy than smearing it on the pillows.

I put a 1/4" x 1/4" blob on each nare......I slop it on.....it seals better that way.

The excess left on my finger is worked into the palms of my hands....to make them soft.

In the morning, I smear what's left of the excess all over my beard stubble. That makes my Norelco happier...and it makes a closer cut.

What I do ain't dainty....and it works great. AHI last night was 0.0, the night before 0.1, and the night before that 0.0. Anything I can do to make the mask seal better simply makes the whole system more effective.

Does anyone use any of these products on the main seal of a nasal or FFM?

Would the nipple grease work around the bridge of the nose to help create a seal with a nasal mask?

It probably would, BUT body heat liquifies it to the point it might very well run into your eyes. If you use too much in your nares, you wake up with it coating your upper lip, the front of your nose and sometimes onto your cheeks.

For those searching: You will likely find it in the "baby" section, and not in with other ointments, Vaseline, etc. (I had to ask in Target...and boy, did I get a funny look! But at least I found it. And, yes, I felt like a boob...)

This seems to be a rite of passage for cpap therapy.

As I was driving to the store to get "nipple grease" and
Polident strips for glueing, I kept saying to myself,
"..I can't believe I'm doing this,
I can't believe I'm doing this."
I searched until I found it.....I wasn't going to ask.

It's a cult.
Takes us places we never dreamed(pun intended)of going.
"If your therapy is improving your health but you're not doing anything
to see or feel those changes, you'll never know what you're capable of."
I said that.

I don't know how effective Lansinoh would be in that type of application, but I agree with LinkC that it would likely be pretty messy.

Others here use a moldable silicone earplug product, rolled into a thin rope and run along the mask's seal to "fill in any gaps" where the mask meets the face. If you search here for info on "earplugs," I'm sure you'll find some posts about it.

Otherwise, I've also read of people using a piece of moleskin (or some other cloth "buffer" between the mask seal and the face), which also seems to be effective.
