Whistling sound - wrong size nasal pillow !?!

Post by Marietjie » Tue Jul 14, 2009 11:45 pm

Bought the Swift Lt nasal pillows last Friday and had two bad nights.
Experienced very unwelcome whistling sounds. I don't want anymore
struggles with masks, pressure, humidity, sleeping pillows,
leaks, and now whistling sounds ! ! ! Had enough !
But luckily, (again) I practiced yesterday afternoon to see
if I can find where this horrible sound comes from.
I think Jesus sent me an Angel to help me - he knows I'm
fed-up. This is what happened. First I looked for leaks - there
were none. My pressure is 11cm and I use the small size pillow.
There were no water drops in the tube or pillow - that means
in my case, it is not a condensation problem. Then I changed
to the medium size pillow - EUREKA ! problem solved.
Slept with the med.zise last night and had NO whistles.
And there was water drops in the pillow. So, just to make sure
if I've got it right now, I tried the small pillow early this morning
and back was the whistling sound! Put the med.size back on,
gone is the sound. Okay, so now I'm sure the sizes were my
problem. Oh my, what next !?!
Could it be that a pressure of 11cm can make this sound
in a small size pillow ? ? ? ?

Absolutely! From a physics standpoint, it takes less air to make a small orifice whistle than a larger one. All other things equal, the pitch will be higher, as well. And when you're trying to sleep, it doesn't take much of a whistle to ruin it!

I'm glad you found it. That could be a tough thing to diagnose...

I have had the whistling sound with both the small size and extra small size nasal pillows. It has been very minimal and very easily eradicated with just a little fiddling with the pillow placement. The extra small size seems to fit me better and I have less whistling with that size. I think it is a combination of fit and placement that seems to cause my whistling. The better the correct size, the less seating placement needs to be adjusted. Most nights no whistling issues at all. Some nights a few whistles and then I move the pillows around a bit until the whistles quit.

Annoying little whistle though. Just enough to keep me awake.

Pugsy - Ja, NOTHING ever must wake me up ! I hate it !
that's why I'm (was) so upset about this whistling sound ! Anyway, hopefully
my problem is solved - will see how it goes tonight !

Considering I'm getting the Mirage Liberty mask, I'm a bit thankful that I have big nostrils.
