Alternate use for the CPAP machine?

Post by CareS » Mon Aug 29, 2005 1:48 pm

My sister and brother-in-law who live six hours from me came to pick up my elderly mother who has been visiting me for three weeks to take her back home. He brought his air mattress to sleep on the floor but forgot the pump. He checked out several of my vacuum cleaners and the garage vac but they just suck air in not blow it out. I said I do have one machine that blows air. Anyway, we hooked up the cpap hose and machine to his air mattress and in less than a minute it was blown up and ready for sleeping. I told him that he is using a $1000 pump to blow up his air mattress and I was concerned that the CPAP would break. It didn't. We thought it was funny blowing up an air mattress with a CPAP machine. Just thought I would share this story with you. CareS

inflating matress

Post by tomjax » Mon Aug 29, 2005 2:57 pm

Someone else reported this and I have not tried it, but I do not believe that a pressure of 10-20 can inflate a matress ready for sleeping.

This is a very small pressure and I say it ain't possible.

An infleted matress ready for sleeping will have much more than 10-20 cm pressure.

The physics just does not fit.
I doubt if it is enough to even lift the matress at all.

Some of our engineers help out here.
I could be wrong

Inflating the mattress with the CPAP

Post by CareS » Mon Aug 29, 2005 5:19 pm

TomJax, The mattress is twin size and my pressure is 8. We inflated the mattress quite quickly and easily with my Cpap. This is true..CareS

I believe you. At our cottage the same thing happened. We needed to blow up a double bed mattress for company and we used a vacuum cleaner which had a reverse air flow button. Sometimes for the kids beach toys that need air we even use a blow dryer with the cool air. Definitely works!!

Its a pump. Its blowing air. As many of us have found if the pressure is high its hard for us to blow against. So a pump that is stronger than my own breath should be able to blow up a mattress I can blow up. Besides keep in mind the pressure readings consider mask exhaust too. If your air mattress is exhausting it will never blow up either.

Do you think it will work on tires? Maybe we should keep an extra cpap in the trunk. LOL. T
