advice on tape

Post by pokey » Mon Sep 12, 2005 11:46 am

Can anyone recommend a gentle tape that will keep my mouth closed without ripping my lips off in the morning? I have Micropore paper which seals well but is getting painful to remove.

Keep in mind that I am NOT a medical professional but there are numerous tapes out there to use. I'm sure you're aware that medical professionals will definitely advise against the use of tape but it's the best solution I've found so far. I use Johnson & Johnson Sports Tape. It's easy to find and inexpensive. It doesn't hurt my skin either but then again, I have pretty tough skin even though I'm female. A lot of people really like Tegaderm Patches but I haven't been able to find them anywhere except the Internet and they are kind of pricey. I've also used Curad Scar Reduction Therapy tape but it's really pricey too and really doesn't do any better job than the Sports Tape. I've also used cloth tape which is pretty comfortable but doesn't seal as well and Johnson & Johnson Waterproof Tape which seals pretty well but isn't very comfortable. Hope you can find something that works for you. I know what a hassle it can be. If you salivate a lot in your sleep, all tapes will come loose some but it sure beats the full face mask thing which I tried for a while. Good luck!

I used to use a chin strap but when I woke up in the a.m. my neck and back of my head would hurt so I switched to tape. I bought the Johnson & Johnson tape for sensitive skin in the roller that has a cutter on it. It worked well.

Now I have been trying it without the tape and I seem to have been keeping my mouth shut on its own (only while sleeping, thank you) minus a few times I woke up with dry mouth but for the majority, I have been doing well.

Someone else on this list used to do the same thing and then eventually they could keep their mouth shut on their own.

Thanks,

Judy Ann, I like that (and I can relate...at least to the "only while sleeping" part). Not that I can keep my mouth closed while sleeping, but that's the only possible time it MIGHT happen.

Pokey,
I use Tegaderm, as recommended by Rested Gal, one of the resident experts. They are a bit costly, but I've found the easiest to pull off in the morning. They are those clear, flexible covers they put over IVs in the hopt. so they can visualize the insertion site and keep the IV in place. They kind of peel off, rather than rip. And if you buy them in large size, you can cut them in half and get two out of one patch.

By the way, where's Gumby???

Just had a second sleep study a couple weeks ago where I told this new to me sleep MD that I tape my mouth closed. He thought I was kidding and even after I told him I knew a number of people who use tape he still didn't think I was serious. Just goes to show how in tune these MDs are. I have used paper type adhesive tape, but lately I have used thin clear packaging tape because it was all I had one night. i have also used wide masking tape. I think you justhave to experiment. Does anyone know where to find the "maroon" chin strap mentioned on other posts? Thanks.

Duck tape, I mean Duct tape!! It'll fix anything - at least my husband thinks so!!! (only teasing - but it COULD help you stay on your back all night - just tape yourself to the mattress - no worrying about leaks from sleeping on your side!!!) Only problem I see is my husband leaves before I get up!!!

later taters!

Still kicking!

I have found CHINUP strips to be very helpful to me. Now my leakage is almost 0 every morning and i no longer wake up with a dry mouth or dreaming that i am drinking a big glass of water! I bought a years worth of them. Before I found them I used 3 different types of tape and even if there was a small opening it would leak. With the chinup strips i can open my mouth a little and still not mouth breath - good for coughing. I did find out by accident that they work better if i cut 1/4 inch from the top.

Fast shipping also.
