OT: Anyone wear a MORA (dental appliance for TMJ)?

Post by Country4ever » Wed Oct 28, 2009 5:32 pm

Hi all,
The number of things I have to wear on my head is increasing. I use a Swift nasal pillow and blue tape on the mouth. Now, because of my jaw locking, I'm wearing a MORA. That stands for Mandible Orthopedic Repositioning Appliance. Besides being very expensive, its a real PITA to wear! This is my 3rd day for it, and its totally irritating. Its just on my lower teeth, but it feels huge and irregular and rough. I'm supposed to wear it 24/7 for 6 months. Right now, I'm not sure I'll make it to 1 week! Eating with it in seems impossible.
I take it out several times a day, just for a mental break. Sleeping with it isn't too bad, as I'm used to having my mouth taped shut.
Anyone else wear one of these? I've heard after a few days, the brain/mouth accept it, but I sure haven't gotten there yet. It seems to be much harder to adjust to than the cpap was.
Just curious if anyone else wears one of these and if you can give me any hope that I'll ever get used to it!
Thanks.

I had one of those for awhile... it's a splint. Had it long before the OSA dx. Lost it in a move about 10 years ago... it's probably in a box somewhere.

Right now, all I use is a bite guard from my dentist.

Did I get used to it? Yeah. To the point that I was upset when I couldn't find it.

Hi cflame,

I'm just going crazy with this. It isn't smooth, and has all sorts of pointed ridges and rough edges. It even has exposed wire clips on the sides. I don't see how a person is supposed to get used to this. Was your first one built up in different places so your mandible would be forced down and outward all the time?
I'm not sure I can do this.

Country,
Mine was all hard plastic... it had grooves for my teeth, and the top grooves were offset enough that it moved my top jaw. After the initial wearing... they wanted me to come back and they'd grind the top part down. I moved before I went back.
