S8 Elite and S8 Elite II...is there a difference

Post by LSAT » Mon Nov 30, 2009 6:02 pm

I have an opportunity to purchase an S8 Elite with 35 hours on Craigslist. Is it much different from the Elite II ??
My current CPAP is great, but, not data capable. Thanks

LSAT,

I looked at ResMed's website at http://www.resmed.com/us/products/s8_el ... c=patients, and came across this description for the Elite II. They state that these are NEW benefits, but it's difficult to tell, as several listed features appear to be improvements to the previous model. Anyway, here's that info:

The premium CPAP device in our S8™ Elite II, featuring the following new benefits:

• New whisper-quiet operation is 75% quieter than before
• New Easy-Breathe technology – ResMed’s revolutionary new therapy system
• New and improved EPR with Easy-Breathe for enhanced patient breathing comfort
• Usage-based compliance download for accurate patient monitoring
• Data card – a standard feature included for easy two-way data transfer

I don't think this is going to give you the definitive information that you need, but it's a start. Hopefully, someone else will come along with more knowledge. I use the ResMed S8 Elite II, so I can answer any questions about that.

The older (Series I) models do not have EPR (exhalation relief) or the EasyBreathe technology. Here's info: https://www.cpap.com/cpap-machine/resme ... -cpap.html

Muse...The description of the older Elite says...."Choice of fixed CPAP or EPR mode for maximum comfort with control. Adjustable EPR settings. Pressure Ramp is available " Is that what you are referring to?

I find that confusing. Unless I am mistaken, the EasyBreathe technology and EPR were introduced in all of the Series II models in the S8 line; they did not exist in the older (Series I) machines (I think the now discontinued Vantage APAP had EPR in the CPAP-only mode or during ramping or somesuch and that was replaced by the AutoSet II). Read the lit carefully if these features are important to you.

LSAT, the biggest difference from a "user" perspective between an S8 Elite and S8 Elite II would be the "Easy-breathe" technology, smoothing the transitions somewhat between exhaling and inhaling. The "II" series machines are also supposed to be considerably quieter than the older "non II"s.

As I understand it, both S8 Elites (with, or without "II" tacked onto the name) have EPR.

I could be recalling it wrong, but I think it was the S7 machines that did not have EPR. An S7 Elite would not have EPR.

EPR, as best I remember, was introduced in the S8 Elite.

The S8 Vantage (an autopap) had EPR only when being used in "cpap mode", as Muse correctly said. Did not have EPR in auto mode.

Then came the "II" series machines in the S8 line. As I understood it, that's when "Easy-breathe" technology was added. And that's when EPR became available in auto mode in the S8 AutoSet II (otherwise same machine as the S8 Vantage.)

Add to all that the confusion of some of the "same" machines having different names in different parts of the world at different times (Spirit = Vantage. Autoset Spirit II = Autoset II. Autoscore II = Elite II ) and it does get hard to keep up with.

Well, I purchased a used (only 35 hours) S8 Elite with humidifier on Craigslist. It does have EPR. The reason for the purchase is to periodically monitor my data. At this time, I plan to continue daily use of my Fisher & Paykel because it seems much quieter than the S8 and does not have the inhale/exhale noise. I have been very happy with the F & P except for the lack of data. Thanks for the comments.
