Mucous-in-the-throat solutions?
In this: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=46981&p=422962&hilit=mucous#p422962 or a similar thread SWS posted a number of symptoms that put me on the track of GERD or acid reflux possibly being the reason for my post-nasal drip. (I was once told this was allergy and nothing to be done.)
During the day this no longer bothers me, but one of the ways my nights could still improve is to not wake up multiple times in the early morning. Often I have gunk in the throat that is not noticeably acidic but is too sticky to easily swallow. I figure it's related to GERD or if my post-nasal drip is from another cause, the air dehydrates it. My current solution is to have Kleenex nearby so at least I don't have to disconnect myself.
These things are already in place in my routine:
- Sleep wedge (elevated upper body)
- Sleep on side
- Take pantoprazole
- Try to avoid late eating, tight clothing, and some of the standard advice for acid reflux
- I saw a recommendation in this forum to drink more water, which I'll try.
Does someone have any additional solutions?

Nasal/sinus rinse really helps me with that problem. In the store, where they have nasal sprays, etc., the also sell neti pots and other products for sinus rinsing. I use the Neilmed bottle and packets. It's very inexpensive and helps a lot.

I used to have that so bad I could no longer exercise in the mornings, I would cough until I threw up - that was mornings for me for the last 10 years. I thought it was asthma or something like that.
Until I started cpap - haven't had it since the first week.

Try "Musinex".....OTC at all drug stores. It thins mucus to make it easier to swallow.

I used to have the same problem. Throwing up was a regular occurence to get rid of the stuff. Neil Med sinus rinse works really well for me. It doesn't eliminate the post nasal drip but it does a nice job of keeping it reasonable. I do this in the morning and before bed. When I get a cold, I do it more frequently. It really helps. I no longer buy the salt packets and just use pickling salt instead (pure usp NaCl without any additives). Much cheaper and convenient.

Thank you for the ideas. I'll try them.

Yep gerd can cause lots of problems. I went to Dr a couple of times with what I thought was asthma and allergies...nope 'gerd'. Coughing is a sign too. Cpap and taking Zantac every night works for me. Also sleep on side. I have not had any sinus infections the last three years either.

Scarlet......
I have the same problem.....although not as severe as some report.
I have ordered a pulse-type nasal irrigation system to clean out my sinus cavities before bed.
I'll report my experiences....either success or failure.

I purchased and used Musinex last night. I could tell that there was less mucous. I still woke up three times. I only needed to clear my throat out when I awoke the final time. But my nose dried out despite the humidifier and a rainy day, and my nasal pillow was almost painful on one side. This is very unusual for me. I'm not ruling out Musinex after only one night, but my primary reason for moving on temporarily is that I feel enough like a medicine cabinet these days. I'd rather not ingest something above and beyond more water if I can find another way. (If I had miraculously slept through that would have been different, although I would have checked in with my doctor about adding another daily medication long term.)
I have to go by the pharmacy sometime today and I plan to try the neti pot or equivalent next.
Re: Mucous-in-the-throat solutions?
Don't do the sinus rinse right before bed ... instead do it in the evening about 2 to 4 hours before bed. Otherwise, you will have residual water in your moving around sinuses when you lay down (which may lead to ear infection if you already have a sinus infection). A good way to get out most of the water is to stand in your shower, lean your head back, then bend over towards your toes and trun your head to one side and gently blow your nose (all in one slow fluid movement). Then repeat only turning your head to the opposite side when bending over.Gerald wrote:Scarlet......

I have the Grossan HydroMed ... it is a bit noisy when using but it does work rather well. At first I used it every day ...now I only need to use it as maintainance or about once a week.

Re: Mucous-in-the-throat solutions?
I take a Mucinex tablet in the AM and PM. Don't have nearly the post-nasal drip problems I used to have. Don't cough nearly as much, either. I used to lay down to sleep and cough for hours.
Give it a try. Just Gaufenisn. Don't get the "DM" variety or the kind with pseudoephedrine in it.
Cheers,
B.

I currently have a stash of Nasal Aire II cannulas in Small or Extra Small. Please PM me if you would like them. I'm interested in bartering for something strange and wonderful that I don't currently own. Or a Large size NAII cannula.
