Would someone be so kind as to explain to me the difference between "nares" and "nostrils"?

And then there are "round" nares, and .....

But here's an interesting little tidbit. The pronounciation.
One nare is pronounced "nair."
If you are blessed with a pair of them, they are your "nair-eeze". Yup, two syllables!
It's not a word I've had occasion to say out loud more than once in my life (don't even ask!) and of course I said it wrong. I said, "nairs". Oh well.
