Dry Mouth Relief: Revisiting Biotene OralBalance Gel

Post by roster » Fri Dec 18, 2009 8:06 pm

Please note that this post is for full-face mask (FFM) users only. If you are using a nasal interface (nasal mask or nasal pillows) and have dry mouth you are likely loosing pressure and your therapy may not be effective.

This post also assumes the source of your dry mouth is from mouthbreathing and you do not have any other health conditions that cause dry mouth.

I have posted on here before that Biotene OralBalance Gel, is an expensive product that is useful for only temporary relief of dry mouth. When I made those posts, I had been using the gel as directed on the package. The package says to apply it to your tongue and move your tongue around until the entire inside of your mouth is moistened. This does give immediate relief. However, after a few minutes of mouthbreathing, the mouth is dry again.

But now I have discovered a different technique to apply the gel that provides hours of relief from dry mouth. Place a small dab of the gel on the tip of the tongue. Using only the tip of the tongue, place the dab of gel between the top two front teeth and the gum. Push the dab all the way up against the top of the gum.

Then pull the tongue back being careful to leave the gel high up in the gum. This takes a little bit of trial and practice to leave that dab intact high up in the gum.

If I have congestion, I tend to do some significant mouthbreathing. I have been able to sleep at least four hours and often as many as eight hours and get relief from dry mouth by using the gel and this technique. Typically I sleep three to five hours before a restroom break. My mouth is almost always still moist at this point and there is still some of the dab of gel high up in my gum. The gel gradually seeps into the rest of the mouth over several hours providing moisture.

If I have been doing heavy mouthbreathing, after the restroom break I might make another application of the gel. Most nights the second application is not necessary and I am still getting relief when I arise for the day.

I had a bad cold the last week and was forced to do considerable mouthbreathing. The gel helped very much during this time. Some nights I made a second application and some nights it was not necessary to make a second application. Careful placement of the gel high in the gum line is important. And of course be careful not to suck the gel into the mouth. Let it seep in slowly throughout the night.

I have been using the Biotene gel nightly for about three months now and the results are excellent. I am only using a small dab and did not keep records but it seems like a tube lasts around one month.

I am going to repeat something. Please note that this post is for full-face mask (FFM) users only. If you are using a nasal interface (nasal mask or nasal pillows) and have dry mouth you are likely loosing pressure and your therapy may not be effective.

Good luck.

Thanks for posting this Rooster, I'm gonna try some for those nights I get congested and start breathing thru my mouth. Dry mouth is no fun and undermines the health of the teeth.

Rooster, I suffer from dry mouth and dry throat but it's nothing to do with mouth breathing in my case as I tape my mouth. I wake up in the night with a cold dry throat. I have my humidifier as high as I can - any higher and I get noisy rain-out ! Still trying to get to the bottom of it .............
