HELP- what do YOU do with your long hair at night?

Post by Trinity101 » Wed Dec 23, 2009 10:53 pm

Hi- I have been wondering what works best if you have long hair- as far as what to do with it at night before masking up. I currently braid mine in two braids and then feed them thru the headgear, but it still gives me "bed head". If I leave it down, it gets very tangled, and if I just put it in one braid or ponytail, it makes a hard lump if I turn on my back. (My AHI is <1.0 on my back , and was also that way at my titration night, so I feel safe turning onto my back in my sleep.) So- those of you with long locks, what do you prefer?? (Both genders reply, please! )

Hi Joan,

I pull my hair into a "pony tail" at the base of my neck but without the elastic tie. Then I slip it under the elastic strap on my mask, mushing it against my neck. Usually once I lay down I flip it up under my head rather than under my neck, which I find irritating.

Its not a great solution, I might try the two braids that you do.

I pull my hair up and either ponytail it or twist it into a bun and pin it at the crown of my head. My headgear slips right over it, and my hair is out of my way all night. Works for me.

I use a CL2 strap on both my CL2 and my Headrest mask.

I brush my (waist length) hair out before bed time, pull my mask over my head, pull my hair through the strap. Then I slide the mask back up onto my head, and put on my brandy-keg chin strap.

I typically sleep on my left side. If I change positions, it's so automatic that I don't even know I'm doing it -- I gather my hair up in a loose knot, roll to my right side, let my hair go, and readjust the mask. In fact, getting the mask readjusted is more likely to wake me than arranging my hair.

I used to use the headgear like a headband, like Kiralynx does. Since then I cut my hair short, and I had to clip the back strap in place to keep it from moving around. And now that I'm growing it out, the clips don't stay in place and it drives me nuts. I can't wait until it grows back out and I can use my hair to weigh it down again. I shower in the morning, after I get up, though. But if I showered at night, I would probably just spritz a little bit of water on the parts that got messed up by the strap and comb it into place.

How long is your hair? The longest I've had it since I got my CPAP is just past shoulder length, but it used to be down to my waist, and I usually just slept with it long then. Sometimes I'd use a scrunchie to put it in a low, loose ponytail at the nape of my neck. Far enough down to pull out of hte way if I wanted to sleep on my back. Maybe that would work for you? Pull it through the headgear, then use a scrunchie to put it in a low, loose ponytail.

Waist length usually, but lately mid back (I cut it to help with the Arizona heat : )
CL2 - hose routed over head to Travel Buddy that allows hose to swivel.

I put my hair in a high ponytail and thread it up through the top of the headgear. I put the ponytail up over my pillow and it hangs between the pillow and the headboard. It is so heavy and long it usually stays there when I turn side to side during the night. The Travel Buddy really helps this because the hose stays up and away from my head and swivels on it's own.

I did have bangs, for many years, but the CL2 headgear flattened them out so badly I decided to grow them out. Now the headgear helps 'set' them in place away from my face and actually contributes to my hair style : )

Well first-thanks to all for your ideas. I still get up a couple of times- and take off all the headgear and mask- can't stand it on my face when I'm up- but I can still try most of the ideas. It sounds like they would only take the same tidbit of time that my current routine does.
Tillymarigold, my hair is a tad longer than the middle of my back, and I plan to keep it long as far as I know.
Thanks, everyone, and Merry Christmas!!

That is what I do too. I tried pulling the ponytail through the headgear (like one would through a baseball cap) but that didn't work as well for me.

LOL! Sometimes I wish I had your hairstyle : ) So cool, so easy to clean, no hairdryer needed (I'm assuming), and hair product money can go for lots of other things : ) Love bald on guys too - very masculine!
