Cpap Mask and facial distortion
Cpap Mask and facial distortion
Hello
I am curious to hear if anyone has noticed whether they have seen facial distortion or sagging since they started to use the mask. When I wake up I look very puffy in my face. I enjoy using the cpap mask which is a full mask. I do mouth breathing because of a deviated septum that restricts my nasal breathing. The tissue over my eyes appears puffy and it looks like I have heavy eyelids now.
Like to hear from anyone about their experiences.
Thanks
Stuart

Re: Cpap Mask and facial distortion
I do wake up sometimes with puffy eyes, but I think it is only if my mask was a bit too tight. But the thing I have noticed more is that my facial skin seems to be aging much more quickly--lots of tiny wrinkles. I just turned 67, but I think I'm starting to look like my 80 year old friends!

australian, anxiety and insomnia, a CPAP user since 1995, self diagnosed after years of fatigue, 2 cheap CPAPs and respironics comfortgell nose only mask. not one of my many doctors ever asked me if I snored
Re: Cpap Mask and facial distortion
I thought my under-eyes were getting more lined since starting cpap, but I think the reason is that I no longer wear moisturiser when I go to bed.... I've since switched to cleansing with witch hazel at night (thanks to a suggestion I found on here) and although my skin is nice and clean, it doesn't feel so dry and pruny
But I do have permanent divets in my forehead

My face has always looked a little "contorted" in the morning... er... that's why I normally try not to look . I goes away shortly... to that fine, handsome young man, that I am...

Try a soft fabric mask, one of the SleepWeaver line.

I would still wear it if it made me look like Quasimodo.
It makes me feel just that good.
The cool thing would be that those rotten kids would stay off my porch.

What i was experiencing with the Amara mask is what looked like wrinkles and an inset that followed the contour of the mask. It took a few days but after I switched to the ResMed P10, those lines dissipated.Irene P. wrote:I do wake up sometimes with puffy eyes, but I think it is only if my mask was a bit too tight. If you think about it, any of these mask that distorts your skin is likely to leave marks of some kind.
Re: Cpap Mask and facial distortion
I also have puffy/sagging eyelids and sagging under eye/above cheekbones, but never had before CPAP use. Have always had remarks that I look younger than my age (now 66) but not recently, and I can see it. Call me vain, but don't want to appear older due to CPAP (full face, recently switched to ResMed F10) mask causing these problems, even though I understand the health related problems for not using - not that vain! I do use moisturizers, but put them on at least an hour before sleep so they soak in, and clean the mask with a natural care Huggies baby wipe each evening before using. Also have had an insomnia problem for several years and will sometimes wake a few hours before I get out of bed and remove the mask for various reasons, did that last night and eye puffiness was reduced. Also loosened the straps last night before bed to see if that would help and noticed today that the "sagging" under my eyes was noticeably reduced!! Just a personal observation, not recommending to anyone and hoping it wasn't just a fluke!

"What i was experiencing with the Amara mask is what looked like wrinkles and an inset that followed the contour of the mask. That is a nasal mask and people who require a full face mask because of mouth breathing, deviated septum or other, cannot use the ResMed P10. Plenty of nasal pillows out there that won't stress the facial skin. Still seeking an answer to help with how this face mask ages the skin so quickly.
