why does air puff out my mouth?
why does air puff out my mouth?
I had my sleep study titration done last night and managed a few hours of sleep after trying four types of masks. The Mirage Activa Lt was the most comfortable. Just as I felt I was dropping off to sleep a puff of air would come into my mouth demanding to be released. The sleep tec thought my mouth relaxed and opened allowing this, so he added a chin strap. When I woke up in the sleep lab this morning, I lay in bed for twenty minutes waiting for the get up call. Several times while I was wide awake the same puffs occurred. I tried napping this afternoon with nasal pillows, SwiftLt, and the same thing happened, (without a chin strap). Does anyone have ideas how to stop the puffs from keeping me awake?

Re: why does air puff out my mouth?
Keeping you awake is not the problem, losing the Cpap air that way is, but chin straps don't work very well and you may need to try on some full face masks because otherwise you're wasting your time and money on Cpap. If the air (being pumped in by the machine) ends up outside instead of down your trachea and into your lungs, what good is it doing? What happens when you're awake isn't important, but if it even happens then, you must assume it's happening when you're asleep, and that's the part that counts.

You really need to keep your mouth shut!!! (I mean that...but in a nice way.)
Julie is right, your therapy is leaking out every time you "puff". A Full Face mask, hybrid-style mask, chin strap, or duct tape is in order. (OK, maybe not DUCT tape, but something to keep your mouth closed...blue painter's tape is a popular choice.)
I have tried all those options at one time or another. A FullFace mask was too hard on my nosebridge. I currently have the Innomed Hybrid mask and I love it! That may not be the best choice for YOU, of course, but I recommend you at least consider trying one.
Folks here will be happy to share their experiences and suggest tips for all of the above options...and a few others as well.
