Regenesis Buckwheat Pillow

Post by Swim_Bike_Run » Tue Jan 12, 2010 9:56 pm

I must point out that I am probably the most finicky pillow person on the planet..and I do mean the most. I have used the same soft foam type pillow for about 10 years.....it was pretty much done and needed to be thrown out but I looked and looked and just could never find another pillow that I liked. I do not like firm pillows at all. My wife uses a memory foam pillow and I hate it - just too firm. So, anyway, I ordered the regenesis pillow but I just think it is going to be too firm for me. I do see the benefit of shaping the pillow so that it does not interfere with the mask, and it definitely does that - but it is simply too firm. I am a stomach sleeper and have my face buried in the pillow. I am probably going to have to return it. I may try to take out more of the buckwheat hulls - I have about 65% of the amount that came with the pillow, but I have a feeling it will not change the firmness of the pillow. Does this bother anyone else? I may just be a weird pillow dude.

I have been experimenting with 4 different pillows (regular, Tempurpedic, contour, and a PapPillow)... 3 I had, 1 bought for xPAP (PapPillow), but none seem quite right every night. I haven't tried the regenesis pillow, but I understand about firm pillows. I think the Tempurpedic works best to hold my head in place all night (it's the kind with a place for the neck), but it is awfully firm. Some nights I like it, some nights I want something softer, so I've just been switching each night depending how I feel. I guess I'm a weird pillow dude too.

I have used a buckwheat pillow for the last 15 years even before I started on CPAP. It takes a couple of weeks to break in a buckwheat pillow (it softens up a little) and get use to it. I would suggest not returning it and giving it a chance. If you really can't get use to it there is another type of buckwheat pillow on the market made by a company called Bucky. It is their duo pillow on one side it is filled with buckwheat and the other side is filled with millet which will gie yu a much softer feeling pillow but works great and will conform to your needs without the break in time.

Swim_Bike_Run, I am the person behind this pillow and appreciate your feedback. Stomach sleepers are relatively rare so I don't get many opportunities to get their reactions. I do have a non-apnea friend who is actually a regional seller for one of the largest mattress manufacturers in the USA--he's a stomach sleeper and uses the pillow. The way he describes how it works for him, I would say that 65% of the hulls is way way too much. He likes to sleep with his arms tucked under the pillow, so he gets one corner of the pillow down to almost flat and snuggles into the pillow somehow... He claims as a lifelong stomach sleeper it's the only pillow that's really worked for him--the only one he has actually liked and been able to get to work.

It seems to me that a stomach sleeper (especially a cpap patient) is going to want a very low profile, non-resilient pillow. I think this pillow delivers though it's not intended to be a "cushy" kind of experience. I am very curious whether it would work better with around 30% of the hulls? I would appreciate feedback so I can make modifications if warranted and develop better marketing materials, instructions, etc.

A buckwheat pillow is different. I've always been very fussy about my pillow also--but don't have any problems because I never changed. (They wore out, but that didn't stop me from using them.) I like the buckwheat pillow......and I own both of Bret's (Sleepguy's) pillows--the original size and the new XL size.

LIke most things, it is important to follow directions. And like most things, I tend not to until I have a problem. (A person can be so educated and so very dumb!) Originally I did follow Bret's recommendations and fill the pillow as he suggested. It was perfect. When cleaning up yesterday, I noticed that I had a small amount of hulls from the first pillow still in the plastic bag, plus the extra hulls from the new pillow in another. Instead of combining the storage bags of extra hulls, it was easier to pour the small amount into my new XL pillow that had been absolutely fine.

Last night I didn't sleep well. Like all here, I tend to get a little obsessed with numbers and tweaking the numbers while I'm learning.........and think it all gets to be in my head. But this am, it's in my neck. And tonight, I'm moving some of the hulls into the one storage bag like I should have.............

The pillows are great positioning devices....I'm wondering why I didn't use them in hospice to help people be comfortable in years past...........there's a whole other market out there Bret!

Scrapper, I want to buy a Regenesis Pillow, and am undecided on which size. Do you have a preference for either one? Is the smaller one too small? Thanks.

I just recently received a Regenesis pillow. It is a much different experience than my memory foam pillow, which I agree is too firm. Being a side sleeper (occasionally stomach), I filled the pillow with about 3/4 of the hulls. Way too much. I now use about 1/2 the hulls and am totally comfortable!

Recently, I developed a pinched nerve in the neck (not related to the pillow) and thought maybe I should go back to a regular pillow for a while. BAD IDEA! The Regenesis provides much better support and helps keep my neck in a neutral position. That's not only good for my neck and spine, but it's also good for my sleep architecture since I'm not dropping my chin to my chest, thus closing the airway.

I'm thinking about buying some millet hulls for the Regenesis to see what kind of experience I have with that. I found a place online where you can buy organic, triple-cleaned millet hulls by the pound. I just don't know how many pounds to get. 3?

Yes its a firm pillow. I use all the hulls, i make a crater in the pillow for my head and go to sleep.
I have both sizes and definitely prefer the large as it allows me to reposition on the pillow when i wake, the small is just big enough for me to make a single crater and stay there. I like being able to move my head over to the side if i decide to change sleep position to side sleeping etc.

Its hard to explain but you i can't see that you will lose out anything by getting the XL over the regular.

My .02 -- I can't stand it when it's much over half full. It's just way too firm and there's no room inside to move the hulls, so it becomes increasing less adjustable as you fill it up.

But many others seem to like it all the way full, including both of my parents (my mom made me get her even more hulls)....

So I think the beauty is that you can experiment with it and get it working however you want it! The Burger King Pillow....

I am a stomach sleeper and I use the Regenesis pillow. (I know I gave a kind of unhelpful review of it earlier, simply stating that "I love this pillow!" without giving any more information.)

I would have to weigh my pillow to know how many hulls are in it. Brett shipped me the cover with no hulls, and I sourced my own hulls directly. But I can tell you that I *can* sleep comfortably, on my stomach, with this pillow - something I can't do with a regular pillow of any kind (memory foam, polyfill, or down...we have them all).
