I get what TomJax is saying: Distilled Water is water that has been boiled/heated until vaporized, and then collected at the other end - leaving behind the minerals and residue.

What is the cpap humidifier if not a rudimentary version of a distillery?

Precisely, which is why it is best to use only distilled water in it.

However, the label for the prodect includes the warning that it is not suitable for drinking and that is not to be used in therapuetic devices. The manufacturers customer services inquiry line advised this warning was included because the product could not sold as being suitable for ingestion or for medical or pharmaceutical use as it was not, and would not be, registered as being suitable for these uses given the expense of obtaining the required registration of the product as a medical product.
It would appear that demineralised water is not distilled water that is produced by means of distillation (condensation of water vapourcreated by boiling water) but is rather town water that has gone through a a number of filtration processes to eliminate minerals, and is as such much "cleaner" than tap water but not as refined as distilled water. I was assured that it would not contain any additives. As a consequence I propose to continue using demineralised water, on the basis that it must be better than simple tap water notwithstanding it is not pharmaceutical grade distilled unless persusive comment to the contrarry is received and would therefore appreciate any comments.

When I was started on CPAP almost four years ago, I had a very good DME (unlike now). And I had probably, the most knowledgeable RT in the Charlotte area. The guy knew EVERYTHING about CPAP equipment!

I was specifically told to only use distilled water in my humidifier. And to this day, thats all I use. I dont use tap water. I dont use spring water. Every once in a rare while, when I am lazy and forget to buy some distilled water I will boil some water from the house (have well water, not chlorinated) and let it cool and use the boiled well water. But thats very rare. Although I think I could get by with it if I had to.

I would never ever use anything other than either distilled water or boiled well water or boiled spring water (from a real spring or clear stream).

Boiling the water concentrates the mineral content. You are going in the wrong direction.

I did not say I do it regularly. And it is better than not boiling it because it kills any bacteria or other micro stuff in the tap water that could go up my nose and start a sinus flareup.

Distilled water 99.99% of the time.
