How do you clean your headgear straps?

Post by RipVanWinkleWannabe » Fri Apr 16, 2010 2:08 pm

I have a need to clean mine, but not sure the best way. I plan to leave the clips on and the straps velcroed so I don't need to readjust. My first thought was to just throw it in the washer and dryer, but would that be too rough, or the detergents too harsh? May be an elementary question, but most of the stuff I found from searching this site referred to machine and mask cleaning, not so much the straps.

I wash my headgear once a week most of the time!! It's a matter of remembering to do it. Neither my hair nor my skin is greasy so I don't worry about missing a week here and there.

I wash the headgear by hand with Classic Ivory DIshwashing Liquid, as I do all my cpap stuff that needs washing. I do the pillows/ cushions for masks every day. I leave the velcro closed and, if the mask has clips I just leave them on. I don't want to be readjusting them either.

My headgear is dry by bedtime if I wash it in the morning.

I take the clips off, reattach the straps immediately without the clips (preventing major adjustment issues later), put the straps in a lingerie bag, and toss it in the washing machine with the rest of my cold-water wash stuff. Don't put it in the dryer, though. Seems to work fine, and I haven't had a problem getting the straps re-adjusted.

I've thrown my straps into the wash machine (sans the clips) before with no issues. Then air dry- the dryer would be way too hot for the elastic.

cheers!

I hand wash mine in Joy dish soap and then after it is rinsed I blot out the excess liquid with a towel and then hang it up wiht the mask still attached. it is dry in no time at all. Have a great day, Huggies, Fay

I toss the whole thing in the sink with dishwashing liquid once a week.

This is interesting. For the past year and a half, I have thrown my headgear (straps & clips) in a zippered mesh bag for delicate stuff, into both washer & dryer at medium setting--about once a month. No problem. Have not ever had to replace headgear.

I haven't washed my headgear since I got my current mask 5 months ago. It is due...I will use mild dish soap.
I only wash my mask every 7-10 days. I use citrus wipes daily on the cushion.

I was it all with diluted liquid dish soap mask straps and all then wring the water out of the straps the best i can. I leave the straps velcroed during thast process. Seems to work ok. Good idea to do it early in the day so it is nice and dry when you go to bed that evening. I hang it in the laundry room or where ever convienent at the time.

This makes me think a paraphrasement of one particular Beatles song.
"All the dirty people.
Where do they all come from?
All the dirty people.
Where do they all belong?
Iiiieewwww, look at all the dirty people."

Okay, I've done the refrain. Others have to come up with the stanzas.

I have flannel cotton strap covers that I replace every week. At the end of the month, several sets of strap covers and the PapCap 'plus' strap replacement model go into the clothes washer sans clips in a zippered nylon mesh bag. The flannel covers are all put in the dryer. The PapCap is left in the dryer for about five minutes, but is then brought out to air dry. It usually takes more than a day to dry, so I use a different PapCap for the next month.

Too much dryer time is bad for neoprene, spandex and velcro, so I'd avoid that as much as possible for any mask strap.

Handwashing in mild soap (like Ivory or 'method') is probably a better for most nylon/neoprene mask straps. Lay them out on a towel to dry.

I found the easiest way was to put it in a small mesh laundry bag and put it in the washing machine with other delicate laundry. I then hang it to dry.

I tend to hand wash my head gear for my Activa just in the bathroom sink with warm to hot water, some scented hand wash soap, gently rub, rinse and then air dry. This works a treat. I tend to leave the velcro in place.

Thanks
Dave

I washed mine for the first time this weekend. I used woolite and hand washed it in the sink by swishing it around. Rinsed well and then air dried for the day. They did just fine and there were no problems when I used the mask that night.

I wash mine in a small mesh bag in the washing machine and I take the clips off.
