How do you determine what size.

Post by CinnyAnn » Wed Jun 30, 2010 6:13 am

Hi,
Just 2 weeks in on cpap and I feel worse than before. Can't even talk to my doctor b/c he is on vacation till the 6th. I have a full face mask, size medium. It fits almost into the corner of my eyes clear down to almost the end of my chin. Very uncomfortable around the eyes . Is there a measurement that you go by or do you just try a different size. I called the equipment supplier on Monday and she said that it should fit between your lower lip and chin (in the dippy part). If I position the mask there it then is in my eyes. She also said that this is the one she recommends and that most of her customers use. I live in a very small area and the supplier is about 70 miles away. What is the first steps on trying a different size. By the way 14 night and only 48 hours on machine. I would think 95% of those hours were waiting to go to sleep before I took it off. I am very frustrated right now.

Unfortunately, you may have been given the wrong size and the only way to check that is to try another size (I use the same one, but for me an odd size (not available in most other masks) is 'small shallow', however there's no reason to believe that would work for you, of course. You should get in touch with your dealer and tell them the mask is too large - how much of a "try on" did you originally get - lying down, straps adjusted properly, mask wiggled around until it felt right? Or just had it handed over to you?

Contact Resmed...the manufacturer of that mask...ask them for a set of sizers. They sent me a set...no charge...for me to find the proper size. They are plastic and you can fit them on your face...instructions are included.

What he said. You may have to try on a few mask styles and sizes before arriving at THE ONE. It may cost you some money, but in the end you'll agree that your sleep and your quality of life are worth it. It sucks, but that's the way it is.

The right fit is so important, it does sound like your mask is too large, since you haven't had it a month yet, the DME may excahnge it for a smaller size by mail. Many of the online retailers have sizing templates you can print and cut out. You don't say what mask you have, but as LSAT said, ResMed will send you a sizing template. Every mask is different.
Good luck, keep us posted.

Contacted my DME and they are going to send me a smaller size mask. I should get it by Friday. They are going to ship it UPS today. Just like that, so easy. I thought I was going to have to go through my doctor (who by the way, is out until the 6th) and get a new script. She understood what I was telling her how the one I have fits. I sure do hope the smaller mask works for me. Thank the good Lord I found this forum. Just reading about others and you know you are not alone in this. At home here I feel alone even though I'm not. God Bless to all and sleep tight.
