using cpap and treadmill together......

Post by semreka » Sun Aug 15, 2010 10:41 am

Hi,
I am curious about using the cpap machine while exercising on treadmill.
Is there anyone who experienced this ?
I reached this idea because of lack of O2 while you are exercising?
Cpap will supply you good inhale and you will exhale it by simply opening your mouth ?
I did not try it yet , I am planning to try...
What is your opinion about this ???

)))))))))))))))))))))))

God Bless..............

I think your premise is false. CPAP is used to open the airway when at rest...because the throat muscles relax or one's tongue falls back and closes off the airway while you are asleep. If you are awake, upright, and exercising, your airway is open! A cpap machine does NOT provide additional oxygen, it just provides pressurized room air to open a closed airway. So.... I would NOT be trying this whilst walking on a treadmill!

No; did you really mean 'treadmill'?
Still no, in my opinion.
Try breathe-rite strips.
Or home-made ones (tape and a strip of plastic like off a cottage cheese lid)
Good luck!

I think you should try it and report back. Turn the pressure to the highest setting.

As an engineer who has taken courses about fluid mechanics in university education , I can say the pressure generated by cpap machine is directly related with the additional debit in the air flow through your lungs. The machine is using the air in your room .It is respirable (approx. 80 % of nitrogen and 20 % oxygen ) . I takes the air in your room and insufflate it into your nose. The whiffled air through your weasand generates a air barrier in your throat and prevents the collapse in soft tissue of your throat. It is simple mechanism. And the air is air. To generate a presure there should be forced flow. that means additional O2 molecules.
It may be useful for your cells to produce more ATP . But I am not sure ....
If any one has some idea about the subject please feel free to contribute.

And... if you were to open your mouth to exhale, all the air would be gone anyhow!

and,
when exhaling finishes , you can close your mouth and inhale through your nose...
I do not know ....
This is not a important topic...
I just want to have brain storming on this subject for fun....

When CPAP is working properly, there is no additional air flow as compared to normal breathing. CPAP creates a pressure to splint the airway open. The rate of airflow is determine by the movement of the diaphragm.

Now with CPAP, you are getting 'slightly' pressurized air into the lungs. A high CPAP pressure is 20 cm H2O. One atmosphere is 1033 cm H2O. Add the CPAP pressure and you are at 1053 cm. This is only a 2% increase in pressure, so you are bringing very few additional molecules into the lungs.

When you try it, post it on YouTube and give us the link.

The lack of O2 when running (assuming properly functioning lungs) is more due to the breathing method and lack of practice. Many people start breathing very shallowly and very fast (panting). Try to teach yourself to breathe deeply using your diaphragm and all of your lungs and hold the air in your lungs before exhaling - yoga style breathing. It makes a huge difference. I usually use my heart beat to count with . 4 in, 4 hold, 4 out 4 hold - this means very long slow breathing during meditation and quick deep breathes when running. The trick is to start breathing like that before you start, if you wait until you NEED air you won't have the control to do it.

Not a good idea, XPAP machines are designed as sleep use devices. When we sleep our need for volume of air goes down, just the backwards from exercising. A XPAP doesn't supply the flow rates needed for exercise. Don't believe me, have sex with your mask on, you will want a bigger hose. Jim

Perfect answer......................
You made me laugh.........)))))))))))))))))))))))
I am happy with my hose when I am making sex.....(even it is not the hose of the cpap)
But we should take the idea of the partners also...

It would be a better idea to adapt a 12 volt automotive alternator with appropriate electronics to your treadmill and use it to charge a backup battery for your CPAP.

But back to the original topic ... I think this is a legit question. I've noticed that now that I'm using my hybrid mask, I get much improved airflow through my nose at night. It also seems better most of the day, but by the time I'm ready for bed again, I notice the positive effect once more when ramped back up to full pressure.

I've always had problems getting enough air during exercise, from as early as I can remember from childhood.
