Can you sleep thru thunder and lightening?

Post by elena88 » Tue Oct 19, 2010 2:15 pm

Wow, we had quite the storm last night.. the thunder was booming, the dogs were shivering, panting, crying and I had to sleep in the guest room
with three large dogs and a cat and the power went out..(NO APAP) It was just miserable.. the lightening lit up the sky like white stars exploding..
I thought one of my dogs was going to have a panic attack.. they even pulled the curtains down in the middle of the night..

I decided to wear my pulse oximeter.. I did not set the alarm because I would never get back to sleep if it went off, so here is...

"THUNDER AND LIGHTENING CUDDLING PETS NIGHT" ON AN OXIMETER....WITHOUT APAP DUE TO POWER OUTAGE ( I was awake a lot of the time, obviously)
It stopped sometime in the morning, so I went back to my bed and started over....

I sure hope its quiet tonite.

So, how do you sleep during thunder and lightening? Are you used to it? Do your pets hate it?

Surprisingly I sleep through it using a cpap, guess it's due to sleeping more sound. I always woke up without it.

Storms always wake me up. I usually plug my CPAP into a battery and try to go back to sleep, but if the storm is really loud I won't be able to sleep through it anyway.

LOL.... I live in the Tampa Bay area...the lightning capital of North America! I am quite used to T&L storms all summer long. It always wakes me up....it is the way it is because they are SO LOUD and can be like mini-hurricanes. In fact, I've probably seen more damage in my area from T&L storms than from any tropical storms in my 36 yrs of living here. The cat doesn't seem to mind them...probably because he was born right at the start of the normal stormy season and acclimated to them from birth.
Yes, that blue eyed beauty is my cat! He is a seal point, bi-color Ragdoll. I adopted him in '08 from folks who could no longer care for him. He is a joy and makes me smile each and every day.

so pretty kitty, you are in the lightening capitol of america? eek!
My kitty didnt mind, but the dogs, just tremble..
Once lightening cracked right over our house, it was the loudest thing I ever heard, the whole house shook, and the horses, well, it was awful..

Well before Cpap, I could sleep through a train going through my bedroom. Where we live they have a severe weather test the first Wednesday of the month, they blow annoying sirens they also go off during severe weather. I lived in this apartment with one of those pretty much in my back yard and if it went off when I was sleeping I never knew or heard it, my wife would have to wake me up to get to shelter. I still can sleep through storms now.

I probably could sleep through the thunder and lightning if the power did not go out, if it weren't for my little shitzu girl. She literally vibrates...she is so frightened! I usually hold her until the thunder quiets.

Yes, Elena, the thunder was loud in our area overnight! It kept waking me up, even with my noisy Headrest nasal pillows and Marpac white noise machine running!

I kept wondering if the power would go out. It never did here, but I was glad that I have a power-out alarm plugged in. That'll let me know with both sound and blinking lights if power goes out, and it should wake me up.

It's good to have the rain, but let's hope that tonight is quieter! I need some good sleep.

Oh, my, well at least you have figured out the positives of that situation...

I will attest that the thunder was loud in our area overnight! It kept waking me up, even with my noisy Headrest nasal pillows and Marpac white noise machine running!

It's good to have the rain, but let's hope that tonight is quieter, Elena!
its raining cats and dogs here now, how about where you are? I heard its going to thunder again tonite! I am so bummed!
Electricty is back on though.. .. Glad the oximeter runs on a battery, so cool! Maybe I will wear it again tonite with the apap working and do
my four hours like a good girl!

Yup, it's been raining cats and dogs all afternoon here too. Perhaps we should wear earplugs tonight? I don't usually wear earplugs, but I just placed them next to my mask. I need sleep!

unfortunatly I cant wear earplugs..

it wont matter, the dogs will be shaking and shivering and crying all night long..

Wish I could get in a transporter and take them all to a nice quiet dry place tonite!

the good thing is, I dont have to water for quite sometime!

Wow! We had a fierce thunderstorm here last night. It's the worst I can remember and it will continue tonight too. We lost power twice. But since I haven't been wearing my cpap anyway I didn't even think about how that would affect me.

My cousin was struck by lightening a few weeks ago and continues to be hospitalized so I've been kind of freaked out by all this lightening we've been having.

I thought you could get electrocuted while on the phone in your home from lightening. Is that right? Could that happen with CPAP? (Seems like a long-shot... but I really don't understand how things can be so dangerous.)
