Breathe Right Strips while wearing mask?

Post by KimberlyM » Thu Dec 02, 2010 8:57 pm

Can you wear Breathe Right Strips with your mask on and during treatment? I have read about people here who use them, but do they mean they actually are able to use them during treatment without them coming off? I am a newbie, so this was unclear to me. I can hardly breathe through my nose and can use all of the help I can get. Thanks in advance.

I wear them all the time! But have had issues depending upon the type of mask I am wearing, and where you place the strip. Sometimes they can cause leaks if they obstruct the seal on the mask.

I think breathing thru the nose is the first major hurdle for newbies. I would say if they are not causing leaks - wear them.

I use them for FFM and Nasal mask and don't need them for pillows. Works swell.

Do you have a preference to which type? I've seen Advanced, Sensitive, etc.

Excellent! Thank you so much for your replies; you guys are great! I ran out and picked up some of the clear kind. I have used those before and they stick pretty well.

I use one almost every night. I cannot begin to imagine how on earth it could possibly cause a leak!! Where on your nose are you guys wearing your mask? The Breathe Right strip goes way down at the bottom of the nose. There is no way my mask could ever be that low on my nose. Either you guys have really, really, really short noses, or you are wearing the breathe right strip way too high.

As far as getting it to stick, I thoroughly clean the sides of my nares (and in the dip at the top of the nares) with alcohol. Then I apply a tiny amount of lotion to the top of my nose just to make sure I didn't clean that part off accidentally. Then I apply the strip. Never have trouble getting it to stick, and the lotion on the top of my nose keeps the strip from ripping my skin off in the morning.

I tried them once a few years ago and they took the skin off my nose by the second night. Don't bother trying them if you have sensitive skin.

I have been using breathe right strips for 5 yrs--I use the large TAN because they hold better for me--the new Advanced don't work for me, the CLEAR doesn't work for me and the generics are just plain lousey--I also use a shot of Nasonex 1 hr before bedtime at the suggestion of my sleep doctor--FA

Dori,

"Regular", the original tan ones, have worked well for me for many years.

"Sensitive" has a weaker adhesive for those who find removing the regular ones painful. If your skin is sweaty or oily, they may not adhere as well.

"Advanced" are of the same material and adhesive as regular, but are wider and pull the nares open a little more for some people. I use these now.

Good, I'm glad you said that because I bought the Advanced today.

Yes, you can wear Breathe Right nasal strips with a mask. I even was allowed to use them in my sleep study. They are great. As the posters suggest here, try the different sizes and types to see which suits you best and be careful when taking them off.
