C-PAP and Pets

Post by treppenwitz » Wed Dec 22, 2010 7:07 am

This is really more of a post to introduce myself than anything else. But I'd be interested to know if anything like this has happened to anyone else:

Being a newly diagnosed apnea sufferer, I now have a sleek looking little machine (a 'Resmed S8 Auto Spirit II', for those of you who are impressed by such things), sitting on my bedside table.

When I'm ready to go to bed, I place the mask on my nose, adjust the straps so they are comfortable (but secure), take a couple of breaths, and the machine starts working automatically... sucking in air, and forcing it through the hose and into my nose. All good, right?

I've been following this routine for a week now, and aside from the dryness I've ben experiencing (I've already asked the medical supplier to send over a humidifier attachment for the C-PAP), I think it's been working out quite well.
  • I sleep better.
    My wife sleeps better.
The kids have something new about which to ridicule their father.
However, last night something happened which caused me to rethink some of the logistics of the whole operation.

We have two dogs. Both of our dogs - in the immortal words of Dave Barry - 'emit aromas'.

There seems to be no rhyme or reason as to when or why the dogs emit aromas. Days can go by without a whiff of trouble... and then, without warning, one or both of them will let loose with a bout of flatulence that can (and often does) clear a room.

Last night the older of our dogs - Jordan - went to sleep next to my bed. With her butt pointed right at my bedside table. Where my C-PAP machine resides.

Have any of you students of literature figured out yet where I'm going with all this foreshadowing?

Sometime around 1AM, I came bolt awake as the smell of necrotic dog colon was pumped efficiently directly from my dog's @ss... through the C-PAP machine... and across my unsuspecting olfactory receptors.

Did you ever see that scene from the movie 'Alien' where the embriotic alien creature has just jumped from its egg sac onto the face of the unsuspecting astronaut, triggering a violent (and unsuccessful) struggle to rip the thing off of his face?

That pretty much describes what happened last night as I came fully awake and tried to yank the mask off my nose... forgetting that it was held securely in place by two straps around the back of my head.

Once I was finally able to free myself, it took awhile before I was able to calm down enough to even contemplate going back to sleep. I used that time to banish both dogs to the living room, and to spray some bathroom air freshener around the master bedroom.

Note to self: Check to make sure the dogs are locked upstairs before putting on the C-PAP equipment and going to sleep.

The best part? Since a friend pointed me to this site, I've been worried about how to introduce myself to the forum denizens... you know, that first post in any online environment is always so crucial to the way strangers relate to you.

Welcome to the site!!! Very unusual introduction, but I like it!!! LOL

In truth, I don't have the dog flatulence issue -- mine is more my husband!!! And yes, I sometimes have that problem, but it usually doesn't awaken me like that.

I frequently get whiffs of unusual smells. Sometimes I ask my husband "Do you smell that??? What is it????" Sometimes he does, but other times he looks at me like I'm nuts!

I look forward to seeing you here and reading more of your posts!!!

WOW---what a funny post!! All the more reason why I am glad I only have cats! LOL! Once in awhile my kitten likes to put her paw over my exhalation port--which wakes me up immediately!!! But no smells--unless it is my husband hahahaaha!!

OMG, I was just thinking the same thing this morning!! I was wondering if I was the only one that noticed how "it" gets funneled straight to the mask! LOL Then I wonder "Why am I the only one awake?? Don't you smell that?!?".

I have 3 dogs and only 1 sleeps in our bedroom....CPAP needs to make a dog fart elimination filter...I'd buy it.

As a dog and cat co-dependent, this was a laugh-and-spit-out-my-coffee post! Welcome!

Actually, for the first time in years, my nose has a respite because of my xpap machine.....i have it in a drawer next to my bed and the drawer is partially closed. I also have a little pad with lavender oil in the drawer. My husband claims that I can sniff out less than a molecule of any substance, so I was always waking up to turn on the fan or open the window--either because of him, the dogs, or the cats. Now I sleep through all of the odors because my machine is well protected from them and pulls air from an area that does not seem to ever be infected with farts.

As with real estate, I guess it is all location, location, location.....of the machine, the dogs, and the spouses....and where the farts travel and settle in the room.

I have two standard longhaired dachshunds. Shadow and Sunny are entirely TOO smart for OUR good. They look like Irish setters on short legs.

I recall the night I woke up with the air through my hose VERY hot. I tried to move. Couldn't. Shadow had gotten up on my pillow, detached the hose from the Hozer, and had it tucked between his legs, turning it into an under-fur air-conditioner on a warm night.

The DACHSHUNDS haven't bothered my CPAP equipment.

The foundling BEAGLE on the other hand.....

Welcome to the forum, treppenwitz! And thank you for that hilarious story.

SnoozyQ, the fart filter is an excellent idea. Whoever can bring that to market will retire with untold wealth!

I use to complain that I could not smell. I haven't been able to smell much in the last 10 years. After reading your post, maybe this is a blessing since I am married to a Mr "fartsalot" and I have a Chihuahua who sleeps right next to my pillow!

I love your writing style. Your dogs aren't perchance labs are they? We have an older yellow lab who jumps up and runs from the room after she passes gas. I feel badly for her because I know she was conditioned by people gasping her name when the assault hit their noses.

My machine is situated above the heat vent.
I was the first to know a field mouse had perished in the ductwork.
