Micropore tape tricks -- please share

Post by MoonBear » Thu Dec 30, 2010 4:07 pm

Hi,

I will be trying the Swift FX for Her for the first time tonight rather than my Quattro. I'm three weeks into cpap.

I want to tape my mouth as the chin strap I got is worthless. I know there are many experienced folks here who use tape and would like any counsel about methodology. is it just one strip across the lips? I have read about having a tab on the end to make it easy to take it off.

Any clues on protecting my lips? I am nervous about ripping lip skin off when I take off the tape.

Any counsel would be very much appreciated. Thanks.

Namaste,
MoonBear

Blue painters tape seems to be the preferred tape.

Cover your lips with lip balm before applying tape. Use non-petroleum type of lip balm. I use Walgreen's generic Burt's Bees type which is inexpensive.

Ditto to what roster said...plus turn in each edge about 1/8 inch enough to be able to give it a grab when you are ready to pull it off. I used one piece all the way across my lips (left to right or vice versa) pull GENTLY on the tab you have made and ease the tape off. I used 1 inch micropore tape.
Good luck

I use 2" 3M micropore tape. I cut a strip long enough to fold back about a half inch (as others have suggested to make it easy to remove) and have about an inch excess on each side of my mouth. I then cut a strip of one inch cloth tape (just long enough to cover my mouth) and stick it equally spaced from top, bottom, and sides to the sticky side of the 2" tape (sticky side to sticky side so sticky tape doesn't stick to my lips). I then position the section of one inch cloth tape directly over my mouth (again, so lips don't touch sticky tape) and seal the tape. This way, my mouth only touches the non-sticky side of the one inch cloth tape with about a half inch of sticky surface above, below, and at each side sealing the tape to my face.

Does this make sense at all, lol?

Sure does make sense, and seems to be a clever ways to avoid pulling sensitive mouth tissue.

FYI -- blue painters tape uses an adhesive, which according to a paint maker, has a glue which, at least, off gasses. I cannot speak to it's safety, but it might be good to look at the safety data on the material safety sheet.

Namaste,

I taped for awhile, but found it so inconvenient if the kids needed more than the standard "un-ha" remark when they came in to let me know they were home.........so then I tried a boil & bite mouthguard found at WalMart for $1 in sporting goods. That has been the answer. I don't know why it works--but it does, and is so much easier to pop in and out rather than tape and untape. The mouthguard keeps my mouth shut and I have 0.0 leaks pretty consistently.

how do you know if the mouth guard is working if you ar the only one in the house?

Also, would the mouthguard re-allign your teeth?

If you go from leaks to 0.0 leaks and the only change is the mouth guard..........it is working.

It doesn't reallign teeth because to prepare it, you boil water, dip the guard in for a certain amount of time, remove it from the water, and insert it into your mouth to mold it before you use it the first time....it's made exactly for your bite.

Does a mouth guard keep your mouth closed to prevent snoring, or does it keep the parts of your mouth and throat apart so that you wont even be in the condition that causes snoring?

right now i have no leaks, but sometimes the chin strap gets to me and i wish there was another way besides a FFM

This is how I tape my mouth - (model is Jeandré) with Micropore dressing tape
24mm. It works very well for me. Lansinoh cream is an excellent lip balm.
Remember to roll your lips slightly inwards.

Handsome Jeandré must be a damn good sport! (Or Marietjie rules with an iron fist?)

Hi, sorry about the delay in answering, actually I love the sleepweaver mask but I have problems that most people complain of,I can't seem to get the leaks out of it.
Sometimes I do pretty good but most of the time I have a real problem with leaks
I called the company and they sent me a smaller headgear but it's the same.
Have a good night!
